Choose Peace And Happiness

What if I told you that you can experience peace and happiness? That you can actually be peace and happiness? Without drugs, without spending money, without getting a particular degree, or job or balance in your bank account? Without losing weight or having your face lifted or your tummy tucked? Well, it's true. It is as simple as choosing peace and happiness and as challenging as having faith in the power of your choice and the awareness and discipline to act on it. 

We spend so much of our lives searching for the key, the right combination of circumstances that will finally result in our feeling happy and peaceful in our lives. We have moments of happiness ~ the birth of a child, a new home, recognition for a job well done; and moments of peace when we see the full moon in a clear sky, or feel the luxurious comfort of getting under the covers of our welcoming bed. All too often these moments give way to the problems and demands of busy and complex lives. Television assaults us with a constant barrage of terror, violence and crisis. Bold newspaper headlines capture our attention with the latest scandal or tragedy described in gory detail and reinforced with photos. Our conversations often focus on what is wrong, what we lack and who is to blame. Stress has become a daily companion and our stress reactions ~ anger, raised voices, drug abuse, over-eating and sleeping disorders, to name a few ~ seem to operate on automatic. While we desire peace and happiness, these obstacles often appear before us as a huge mountain range. And at the same time it is crucial to know that you can make the choice for peace and happiness at each and every moment. So, right now, take a deep breath, and in a clear, bold, authoritative voice, oozing with conviction, say, "I choose peace and happiness." Say it and say it again and again until each and every cell in your being hears you, feels you and knows they have just gotten new marching orders!

You have just taken a powerful step ~ a leap of faith that will illuminate your peace and happiness path. Our next step is to become aware of our thoughts, words and actions and determine if they support an experience of peace and happiness or if they block the flow of peace and happiness. This can seem like a daunting task to now pay attention to every thought, word and action. The most direct route to monitor your peace and happiness is your feelings. Our feelings, the sensations we feel in our bodies, are our foolproof, always operating guidance system. Our feelings let us know if we are centered or stressed; in the flow or not; connected or disconnected with the source energy of the universe; experiencing love or fear. When we're in the flow we are traveling the peace and happiness path; when fear has moved into the driver's seat of our lives it is simply a call to return to center. Our challenge is that we are used to associating a story of drama and woe with our fearful feelings and outside circumstance with feelings of love and satisfaction. We gather up the evidence for why we are feeling what we are feeling. We tell the drama of our fear, anxiety and victimization to others or repeat it over and over and over again in our minds. We are actually energizing exactly what we don't want in our lives. Our feelings don't need a story. They simply are our feelings a way we are feeling at a particular moment in time. We can acknowledge them, "I feel sad," or "angry," or "alone." We do not need to take up permanent residence in the continuing saga of "poor me." View yourself from the point of view of The Law of Attraction ~ you may be familiar with it stated as, what goes around comes around, you get what you give, or in the words of Ernest Holmes, "thoughts held in mind manifest over time. Our thoughts are magnets for our experience. The starting point of everything that exists in our world is our thoughts. Whether it is a paperclip, a loving relationship, a new medical procedure, a war or a glorious vacation ~ each of these begins in the minds of people. When our thoughts are formed and then embraced with faith ~ believing in them ~ spoken of with authority and acted on with conviction we then attract that experience into our three-dimensional world. 

What does this have to do with peace and happiness? Everything. Now that you've made the choice, your primary "job" is to focus your attention on thoughts that generate peace and happiness in your experience. Make a Pleasure List of those situations, circumstances, people and ideas that are pleasurable for you to focus your attention on. Items from my Pleasure List include: walking with my sheepdog Rosie on the beach in the morning and seeing the sun glistening on the water; the sound of my granddaughter's laughter, the fragrance of honeysuckle; the feeling of a foot massage. Once you have your list you can then use the items on it as a place to focus your attention when your feelings have let you know that you are off center. And if the power of self-defeating and abusive thoughts is too strong to remember the items on your Pleasure List then first acknowledge what you are feeling (not why you are feeling it) and then focus on your breath your inhale and exhale. These are powerful exercises because the entryway to peace and happiness is where we place our attention. What you are doing is creating new patterns and habits of thought and thereby creating new experience. 
Here are some additional tips and techniques for you to follow to make peace and happiness your way of life.

- Focus on accomplishments. Each day make a list of 5 things you accomplished. This isn't about magnitude of accomplishment it is about seeing yourself as someone who accomplishes things.

- Hug others. Give and receive 10 hugs a day.

- Use the good dishes. Get out those special things you've been saving for a special day, today is a special day, it is another day of your life.

- Exercise. Move your body, get your heart rate up; stretch; lift some weights and strengthen your muscles.

- Have a new thought. Imagine that at each and every moment everyone is doing the very best s/he can. See the gift in every situation, when you are stuck in a traffic jam focus on this being a great opportunity for you to practice patience. Become a great lemonade maker, turning lemons into that cool, refreshing summertime drink!

- Meditate. For 20 minutes per day, sit in silence and focus on your breath, your inhalation and exhalation. When your mind wanders bring it back to your breath.

- Be kind in your thoughts and actions.

- Say the Pray for Peace & Happiness. When you wake up, before you go to sleep and anytime you need to during the day when you off center.
