Aromatherapy:
Developing A Friendship With Essential Oils

While employed as a buyer for a moderately sized health food store, I had
the opportunity to learn, as well as teach, much about essential oils and
aromatherapy. I involved myself with our collection of oils, which was a
large and diverse assortment of brands and qualities, (for sale and store
use) and created a working knowledge of my own experience as well as the
experiences from customers and co-workers. Through it all, I had some
great discoveries, and I always enjoyed (and still do) living with
essential oils.
Good quality oil is 100% pure and suited for medicinal use. Quality oil is
also alive. People who have worked with essential oils know this.
Lavender, oregano, frankincense, lemon and rosemary (as well as others)
become friends of ours; loyal and constant helpers for emotional ailments
as well as minor physical ailments. Each oil has a personality, which
varies from brand to brand and bottle to bottle. What was in the
soil at the time of growing and harvesting, what was in the air during
growing, even the equipment that was used to distil the oil, influence
this personality. I find it very exciting when people search for oils that
are compatible with their own personality. Oils have such a wide range of
uses in Aromatherapy; there is an oil out there that could enrich/heal
some part of every person’s life. They are precious and beautiful in
whatever they do. They are true gifts to us, tools we can use to promote
healthy life. I use oils to enlighten mood, heal minor skin problems and
first aid emergencies, as well as soften and smooth skin. Below I have
listed a few of the remedies I have found for common problems, in the hope
that everyone has a chance to ‘meet’ an essential oil.
Cystic acne: I have found pure Cypress oil to be very helpful with these
outbreaks. Apply a drop of the oil to the site of the problem twice daily.
Continue this for several days after the cyst seems to have disappeared. I
find it usually takes a few days to notice great improvement, but after
that, the cyst disappears quite quickly.
Sunburn: Lavender oil is definitely the best choice for this. All burns do
well with this oil, but added to the skin straight, allowed to soak in and
then slathered liberally with aloe Vera, Lavender is very helpful for sun
burnt skin. If the skin peels, continue treatment with Carrot Seed oil.
Nausea: To me, there are two causes of this ailment, one is physical one
is emotional. The nausea brought on by a physical trouble (morning
sickness or car sickness) can be helped by Ginger oil, just inhale from
the bottle. The second sort of nausea, caused by emotions (‘making
yourself sick’ by worrying or thinking about things you aren’t ready
to face) can be helped by Helichrysum, which can also be inhaled from the
bottle. I have found this oil to be my absolute favorite for many
different reasons, but mostly because of it’s deep, rich, fruity smell.
Not as sweet as Ylang ylang and far more precious, this oil has a hint of
pepper, which is very exotic. Helichrysum is one of the more expensive
oils, but worth every penny. Anyone who experiences this oil will want it
beside them.
I use my essential oils everyday, and delight in their presence and the
knowledge of where they come from. I had the great opportunity to meet a
man named Avraham Sands, owner of Tiferet Aromatherapy. Knowing who makes
your essential oils, and why he makes them, makes their use even more
special, even more of a gift. I hope everyone has the opportunity to
experience the wonderful ways which Aromatherapy can change your life.
