Illuminating
The Workplace
by Rev. Omar Khayyam Yeldell
For every calling there is a purpose. Many times the purpose is befuddled
by our own limitations and prejudices. A very thin line of perception,
separates what is indeed objectively fair on one side, and having our own
way. But once we consciously accept a role as Light worker, as healer to
be more exact, the ever-loving Universal energies respond accordingly. Not
according to our likes or dislikes, but according to the best interest of
those who are in need of healing. All sorts are attracted to the Light,
and therefore we must welcome all who come to us, or all whom are
attracted to us. If the Light shines brightly, illuminating the dark and
transforming the negative, why are we so surprised when we find ourselves
surrounded by negative people or put in critical situations of despair?
For those of us who work 9-5 jobs to pay bills; one of the hardest places
to continue the role as healer is in the workplace. There are numerous
reasons for this, so I would like to focus on perhaps three of the most
common barriers that prevent us, as healers, from reaching our full
potential in the workplace.
Stress
Pressure
to meet deadlines, to perform well, even to look a certain way; all play a
major role in deflecting our energies from healing. Stress is
predominantly a byproduct of outside influences that overwhelm our
reasoning capabilities. Stress does not originate from within Spirit nor
is it projected outwardly. Stress comes from an outside factor and affects
Spirit within. For example, an Olympic swimmer has trained numerous times
and is in tip top shape, but if you were to one day strap a 5 pound weight
to their backs before they start their routine, there is no way they would
be able to match their time. An outside influence, which in this analogy
is the 5-pound weight, hindered the swimmer from performing up to par. If
the swimmer were to practice with the added weight however, the results
would be favorable. Stress in the lives of healers does exactly the same
thing. Stressful situations are tests of mental endurance.
The best way to adjust to stress encountered at the workplace is
preparation; primarily mental preparation. Know that perception is key to
adjusting and diffusing any form of stress. When encountered by a
stressful situation at work, take some time to really perceive the whole;
meaning for every problem, there is a solution. One of the best steps in
problem-solving, is to acknowledge the worse case scenario. What is the
worse that can happen? The acknowledgment in itself, takes some of the
power out of a seemingly uncontrollable situation. The next step is to
accept what is within your power to change and what is not. Release the
"nots" and concentrate solely on what is within your power to
change. Know your own limitations to avoid over burdening yourself and
setting yourself up for disappointment.
There can often times be contributing factors to how we deal with stress
at the workplace which have a direct correlation to our physical
conditioning as well. Malnutrition, dehydration, smoking or being around
those who do, caffeine, and fatigue. All of the above effect an
individual's immediate perception and ability to handle stress.
Criticism
One thing I have learned in my years of Light service is that those who
criticize are in need of healing more so than those who agree. In fact,
criticism is a plea for focused attention. There is such a thing as
constructive criticism and we all need doses of that every once in a while
to keep us humble. The type of criticism that impedes our ability to
illuminate the workplace though, usually are words that seem to find a
home under our skin. Words which trigger the worse aspects of Ego and
retaliation becomes our most attractive and convenient response. But we
all know, even the most witty of responses, can be uttered and not contain
one once of love or empowerment, therefore containing nothing of value and
are indeed, counter productive to the healing process. What is the proper
response then?
The proper response is to focus. Words uttered in your direction which are
meant to hurt you carry at the core a plea for help, as well as; an
underlying need to be understood and accepted.
If misery loves company, then critics love a target. What better target
than one illuminated?
Fatigue
Although universal energies have an abundance of limitless power to heal
and energize, if we as Healers and Light workers channel said energy
through our bodies, our bodies must be fit. This would include much needed
rest. Hectic schedules at work can utilize an enormous amount of physical
energy. Waking up at odd hours, putting in overtime, perhaps having to
work more than one job; all contributing factors to physical fatigue.
I would be remised if I did not at least mention poor diet at this point,
because a poor diet contributes to fatigue as well. If you are not eating
and digesting proper nutrition, your body is lacking the appropriate
vitamins and minerals to sustain a certain level of homeostasis and
alertness. How can you attempt to uplift the spirits of a coworker, being
tired and worn out yourself?
Listen to your body. I would also like to caution against forming what I
like to call a "savior complex". This is when you feel it is
your duty to heal everyone and anyone who comes to you, despite what you
are doing or how you feel. The universe is quite vast, so it is important
to have faith in its ability to move the individual along and on to
another healer who has more time or energy, when you decline to help them
due to fatigue.
In sum, the workplace is fertile grounds for healing. Not only will you be
uplifting and strengthening those around you, but you will also gain an
enormous amount of knowledge pertaining to Self and its relationship with
the loving Universe. The Buddhist have a saying:
"Whenever you are in doubt as to where you are supposed to be along
your respective Path, just look down at your feet." Considering how
much time we spend at our jobs, there is no reason why our ability to
illuminate should be reserved for outside the workplace.
