Refuel: Bring Sleep into Your Night NEW!
by Ashley Koff, RD, and Kathy Kaehler

Life as a mom is a shapeless blob of happy chaos. ~ Julia Roberts

What your body does from the time it slips into bed to the time it wakes you up might have more to do with your energy metabolism than you realize. New findings in sleep medicine are currently revolutionizing how we think about the value sleep brings to our lives.

For so many moms we interviewed for this book, sleep ranked high on the list of priorities. Chaka Khan calls sleep “the key to a great energy balance”; Julia Roberts admits that any extra sleep she can get helps counterbalance the “mom struggle” that naturally accompanies having time thieves running around her house. Most of us just don’t get the sleep we need. Sleep deprivation is epidemic. And let’s face it: When we’re sleep-deprived, moody, and things don’t go our way, we can begin to go down that dreaded path that ends in depressive thoughts or a full-blown depression.

This Cooking Oil is a Powerful Virus-Destroyer and Antibiotic
by Dr. Joseph Mercola
NEW!

You've no doubt noticed that for about the last 60 years the majority of health care officials and the media have been telling you saturated fats are bad for your health and lead to a host of negative consequences, like elevated cholesterol, obesity, heart disease and Alzheimer's disease.

Meanwhile during this same 60 years the American levels of heart disease, obesity, elevated serum cholesterol and Alzheimer's have skyrocketed compared to our ancestors, and even compared to modern-day primitive societies using saturated fat as a dietary staple.

Are Vaccinations Good Parenting?
by Jesse Cannone

While shopping near the kids section of a clothing store last week, a brochure caught my eye. The front was adorned with a very large picture of a baby caught in wide-eyed surprise. The title read, “Whooping cough sounds scary. Promise me you’ll get vaccinated.”

As a father of 8, you can bet your britches I want to protect my kids’ health. But here’s what gets me. This brochure, purporting to be a helpful public health service, is published by Sanofi Pasteur - one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world. No conflict of interest there, right?

Avoid These 7 Foods and You're Off To A Healthier New Year
by Dr. Joseph Mercola

1. Canned Tomatoes
The expert: Fredrick vom Saal, PhD, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A

The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Acidity -- a prominent characteristic of tomatoes -- causes BPA to leach into your food.

2. Corn-Fed Beef

The expert: Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of books on sustainable farming

Cattle were designed to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. A recent comprehensive study found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

How Probiotics May Stop Stomach Pains, Alleviate Esophagus Problems & Control Stomach Acid
by Michael Richard Burke, M.A

Louis Pasteur was the Mick Jaeger of nineteenth century science. And, rightly so.

But, rock star that he was, he made the words "bacteria" and "bacterial" synonymous with disease.  This misconception is still with us today. The truth is that some bacteria can actually help you alleviate esophagus related problems, stop stomach pains and control stomach acid.

By developing a healthy nutritional lifestyle, we can bring balance and harmony back to our human existence and it can begin with the next meal you eat.

Understanding Breast Cancer: Tips For Wellness
by Dr. Rita Louise

Our body is made up thousands of cells that differ in size, shape and function. Controlled by our DNA, each cell is programmed to perform certain tasks and after a specified period of time - die. This is normally done in an orderly manner. However, if our cells are exposed to carcinogens, viruses or ionizing radiation, for example, the DNA can become damaged creating havoc with this once orderly process. Said another way, if the rate of new cell growth in the body overcomes the rate of cell death, tumors can develop. If these cells invade and destroy surrounding normal tissues, the abnormal cell growth is considered to be cancerous.

Seven Simple Brain Promoting Nutritional Tips
by Daniel G. Amen, M.D.

Here is the seven step plan to get your diet under control and to use food as brain medicine.

1. Increase water intake
Given that your brain is about 80% water, the first rule of brain nutrition is adequate water to hydrate your brain. Even slight dehydration can raise stress hormones which can damage your brain over time. Drink at least 84 ounces of water a day. It is best to have your liquids unpolluted with artificial sweeteners, sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. You can use herbal, non-caffeinated tea bags, such as raspberry or strawberry flavored, and make unsweetened iced tea. Green tea is also good for brain function as it contains chemicals that enhance mental relaxation and alertness.

When someone is experiencing hypothyroidism the thyroid gland is impaired, producing too little thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is due primarily to a dysfunction of the thyroid gland itself. If the thyroid gland is removed, obviously, the body is unable to produce any thyroid hormone. If the thyroid is partially removed, it may be able to produce enough hormones for a while, but over time it can become overworked and burn out. But the thyroid can also become impaired for many other reasons.

The Art of Ayurvedic Stone Massage
by Karyn Chabot

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning the ‘science of life’ and the ‘art of being’ or living in harmony with nature. What does the term shila abyhanga mean? In Sanskrit, ‘shila’ means stone, ‘abhy’ means to rub and ‘anga’ means limb. Together, they form the word for stone massage. Heated stone massage is a form of thermotherapy, otherwise known as a form of swedhana, a modality used during pancha karma (internal and external rejuvenation and detoxification of the body, mind and spirit). Shila abyhanga dates back thousands of years and can be traced to the ancient healing traditions of almost every culture. One of the most popular ways to use heated stones in India is to wrap them, along with herbs, in a warm, moist cloth, creating a poultice. This poultice can be applied locally for joint or muscle pain. Large, flat warm stones, used with warm oil, can be glided across tight muscles. The ingestion of specially prepared ashes of specific gemstones can be used for healing and reducing all three doshas. Diamonds, rubies, and emeralds were crushed, heated, prepared, and ingested exclusively by the royalty of India long ago as part of pancha karma.

atty meal. When we eat, our gallbladder contracts and pushes bile into the small intestines where it helps with the digestion of fats. Bile is made up of water, cholesterol, fats, bile salts, proteins and bilirubin. A certain amount of mucus lining is necessary for the protection of the membranes of the respiratory and digestive systems. It serves as a fluid transportation system, which also carries microbes and foreign particles out of the body.

Healing Urinary Tract Infections Naturally

A urinary tract infection is an infection of the kidneys, bladder or urethra.  In most cases, it is brought on by the introduction of the E. Coli bacteria into the urethra. This can cause inflammation or infection. For example, when this bacteria travels up the urethra to the bladder, it is the #1 cause of bladder infections. While the E. Coli bacteria is the most common cause of urinary tract infections, bacteria can also enter the urinary tract via the blood stream that feeds the kidneys and cause an infection. It can also be introduced through the insertion of medical instruments such as a catheter.
