The
Death Card In The News

I have been using a variety of different Tarot decks for many years to
prompt intuition and self-development and to help others connect with
their own inner guidance and Higher Self.
Tarot is like electricity. You can use it to light a whole village or to
electrocute an elephant. (Thomas Edison actually did this dreadful
experiment. I have seen this on video, I am very sorry to say.)
The power in the Tarot Deck should be used with wisdom to help people
connect with their best self and their fullest potential. My favorite deck
was designed by James Wanless who graduated from Columbia University with
a PhD in Political Science. Wanless created the Voyager Tarot Deck, a deck
that doesn't appeal to superstitious, ignorant or dark people. It is full
of light, life, empowerment and love!
There are two cards in any Tarot Deck that have a very bad name. All
78-card decks are the same by the way. They just have a different artist.
These two cards are Death and the Devil.
Let me discuss these two cards for a few minutes.
Tarot cards represent things symbolically. Death is a symbol for change.
Our egos react to change as if it were death. The best reading of the
Death card is "transformation". It has nothing to do with
violence and destruction other than the catabolic "elimination"
of things that have outworn their use. Take the food in your digestive
system for example. When what is left of your breakfast cereal is
eliminated from your body later in the day, this process is ruled by the
Death card.
The Devil card is best understood as a function of inner character. For
example, there are times in life when we wish we could get away with
saying, "The Devil made me do it," but in truth we cannot. This
kind of Devil lurks within all of us and must be guarded against by
vigorously pursuing the good.
The fact that a piece of cardboard with a skeleton on it could be
frightening to people is testimony to the power of symbols and also to the
strange disassociation Americans have with the whole concept of death.
In our culture people die antiseptically in hospital beds and rarely in
the course of nature so we are not used to the specter of death and give
it unnatural powers.
One day, Death will come for each of us. But as Karl Jung said after
his heart attack in 1944: "What happens after death is so
unspeakably glorious that our imaginations and our feelings do not suffice
to form even an approximate conception of it."
