Beyond Self-Image NEW!

A few years ago, I was fixated on overcoming what I saw as my “negative self-image.” Basically, the problem was that I wanted to do certain things I thought would be enjoyable and fulfilling, but I was afraid of doing them. I wanted to start my own business, make more of an effort to meet people, take up more “extreme” sports, and so forth, but I would feel anxiety when I’d contemplate doing those things, and would find myself holding back.

I used to think this meant my unconscious mind had an “image,” or perception, of me as someone who didn’t or couldn’t do those activities. My mind, I believed, was refusing to allow me to act inconsistently with that image. I didn’t know how I’d developed my self-image—maybe it was genetic, a childhood event, not enough Vitamin C in my diet, or something else—but the fact remained that it was there. Thus, I was focused on finding a way to improve my self-image—to convince my unconscious mind to view me as someone capable of taking up the challenges I wanted to face. If I did that, I thought, anxiety would no longer keep me from achieving my goals.

Guilt-Free Mindfulness  NEW!

Mindfulness is being aware of yourself, others, and your surroundings in the moment.  Well-known mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines it this way Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally. I also like to think of mindfulness as the art of inhabiting your own life with kindness and acceptance.

When first entertaining the idea of practicing mindfulness in a conscious, committed way, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I absolutely believed that I would love the peace of mind and sense of balance that those who practiced mindfulness seemed to enjoy. On the other hand, I groaned inwardly at the thought of adding yet another guilt-inducing "should" to an already full schedule. Two different things tempered my concerns and helped me make a wholehearted commitment to the practice of mindfulness. One was noticing how calm, accepting, and humorous people were whom I knew practiced mindfulness regularly. I wanted more of that appealing equanimity and joy. The other realization was a semi-embarrassing "Duh!"  Instead of making mindfulness a guilt-inducing chore, I could simply choose to make practicing mindfulness a joy and celebrate each small step taken.

It’s human instinct to reach for the familiar, but the soul is here for experience, not security. A life without risk, loss, death, and pain is hardly vitalized. Thus I call this process of entering a transitional space where some new creative aspect of the soul is beginning to birth into your ego structure —which demands that your old self-concept reshape—the dark night of the ego!

The Perception--Well-being Connection

Our own perception of the world and those we're personally involved with stems from our childhood. If you grew up with one or more parent(s) who displayed constant anxiety, worry, anger, etc., then you have most likely adopted that same behavior as an adult. Some people eventually recognize this in themselves and some never do. And even when the ones that do recognize this in themselves they tend to just accept that behavior as "who they are." They might try, through various methods, to rid themselves of this unwanted negative behavior only to wind up frustrated when something triggers a certain emotion and they find it hasn't really left. So they give up and just accept that this is who they are and that change is impossible. Maybe they are still hearing the message that has been given to them over a lifetime, "Oh, that's just they way you've always been, that's your personality and you'll never change." They then decide that they are comfortable this way and fear any kind of change, even if it would mean a positive change.

Seven Simple Brain Promoting Nutritional Tips

1. Increase water intake
Given that your brain is about 80% water, the first rule of brain nutrition is adequate water to hydrate your brain. Effectively Working with Affirmations

In my years of teaching and counseling I have come to the conclusion that many people are unsure of what affirmations are, how to use them, what great tools they can be, or what good benefits can be manifested by working with affirmations in both children and adults. In the simplest form an affirmation is a statement of a positive effect, result, or of a future event that you would like to achieve. Usually an affirmation is stated in the present moment and in positive verbiage and wordage. For an example “ I can do this” as opposed to “I’d like to do this” or “I’m going to do this.” The sentence “ I can do this” is set in the present moment and it implies confidence in one’s ability to accomplish the task and an immediacy to take action. The statement “ I’d like to do this.” Implies that it is not quite possible but you are yearning to do it but (something out of your control) is preventing that.  “I’m going to do this” implies sometime in the future when all the conditions are right. In that case we can make an assumption that the conditions will never be right.

Self hypnosis is usually thought of as a person listening to an audio tape, mp3, or other mass-produced media, intended to induce a willingness to absorb suggestions centered around a specific topic such as weight loss, stop smoking, etc. Unfortunately, this kind of hypnosis is generally prepared by someone who has never met the person being hypnotized, often presenting unwanted, even unpleasant imagery and suggestions. For example, if you sunburn easily, that last thing you want to hear about is a slow walk on a sunny beach. In this case, the "self" in self hypnosis simply means that you listen to it by yourself!

Recently, four of us were celebrating the January birthdays of two girlfriends at a Scottsdale restaurant. We had a wonderful lunch, followed by going to see Calendar Girls. I arrived at the theater first and purchased my ticket. I had no idea that Birthday Girl #1 wanted to gift each of us movie tickets. Friend #3 was having “receiving” issues, sputtering in protest, “It’s your birthday and you shouldn’t be buying tickets for us!”  I responded, “It is her joy to give and you are taking away her happiness if you don’t receive this.”  She got it instantly—and accepted the gift graciously.
