Beyond Self-Image NEW!
by Christopher R. Edgar
A few years ago, I was fixated on overcoming what I saw as my “negative self-image.” Basically, the problem was that I wanted to do certain things I thought would be enjoyable and fulfilling, but I was afraid of doing them. I wanted to start my own business, make more of an effort to meet people, take up more “extreme” sports, and so forth, but I would feel anxiety when I’d contemplate doing those things, and would find myself holding back.
I used to think this meant my unconscious mind had an “image,” or perception, of me as someone who didn’t or couldn’t do those activities. My mind, I believed, was refusing to allow me to act inconsistently with that image. I didn’t know how I’d developed my self-image—maybe it was genetic, a childhood event, not enough Vitamin C in my diet, or something else—but the fact remained that it was there. Thus, I was focused on finding a way to improve my self-image—to convince my unconscious mind to view me as someone capable of taking up the challenges I wanted to face. If I did that, I thought, anxiety would no longer keep me from achieving my goals.

Mindfulness
NEW!
by Sue Patton Thoele
Mindfulness is being aware of yourself, others, and your surroundings in
the moment. Well-known mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines
it this way Mindfulness means paying
attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and
nonjudgmentally. I also like to think of mindfulness as the art
of inhabiting your own life
with kindness and acceptance.
When first entertaining the idea of practicing mindfulness in a conscious,
committed way, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I absolutely
believed that I would love the peace of mind and sense of balance that
those who practiced mindfulness seemed to enjoy. On the other hand, I
groaned inwardly at the thought of adding yet another guilt-inducing
"should" to an already full schedule. Two different things
tempered my concerns and helped me make a wholehearted commitment to the
practice of mindfulness. One was noticing how calm, accepting, and
humorous people were whom I knew practiced mindfulness regularly. I wanted
more of that appealing equanimity and joy. The other realization was a
semi-embarrassing "Duh!" Instead of making mindfulness a
guilt-inducing chore, I could simply choose to make practicing mindfulness
a joy and celebrate each small step taken.

The Voice of Fate vs. the Voice of Destiny
NEW!
by Robert Ohotto
It’s human instinct to reach for the familiar, but the soul is here for experience, not security. A life without risk, loss, death, and pain is hardly vitalized. The more we resist the call to adventure, the more we fate ourselves to suffering of the worst kind. In such cases, the Universe will often deliver increasingly drastic events until we finally give up the ego’s hold on our soul’s schedule and allow the next chapter of our purpose—our Destiny—to unfold.
It’s at this juncture of resisting our Divine timeline that many of us reach a threshold, often catalyzed by an outer fated event. We’ve come to know it as the dark night of the soul. Yet I always felt that this phrase was a bit of a misnomer because it’s the ego, our self-concept, which is actually being set adrift into the unknown. It’s here that a part of it must die so that something new from the soul can enter in. And it’s the ego that experiences the inherent fear of this change, not the soul. Thus I call this process of entering a transitional space where some new creative aspect of the soul is beginning to birth into your ego
structure —which demands that your old self-concept reshape—the dark night of the ego!

Why Do We Feel Sick All the Time:
Metaphysical ‘Cures’ For What Ails Us
by Steven E. Hodes, M.D.
Many of us suffer from the “I feel sick syndrome.”
We are not truly “ill,” in the sense that we do not have a significant malfunction of an organ or organ system that can be readily diagnosed by traditional contemporary medical testing. But we certainly experience bouts of discomfort, pain or distress—in other words, we just don’t feel right—we just feel sick!

Shielding and

I'm going to be honest with you. I have issues with this particular topic.
Far too often the concepts of shielding and protection are filled with
misunderstandings and a lot of drama. Rather than create a sense of
security and comfort within Self, despite the appearance of safety, it
tends to reinforce a belief that one is powerless. This in turn reinforces
the fear that shapes our experience.

____________________ The
Perception--Well-being Connection
by Kimmie Smith
Our own perception of the world and those we're personally involved with
stems from our childhood. If you grew up with one or more parent(s)
who displayed constant anxiety, worry, anger, etc., then you have most
likely adopted that same behavior as an adult. Some people eventually
recognize this in themselves and some never do. And even when the
ones that do recognize this in themselves they tend to just accept that
behavior as "who they are." They might try, through various
methods, to rid themselves of this unwanted negative behavior only to wind
up frustrated when something triggers a certain emotion and they find it
hasn't really left. So they give up and just accept that this is who
they are and that change is impossible. Maybe they are still hearing
the message that has been given to them over a lifetime, "Oh, that's
just they way you've always been, that's your personality and you'll never
change." They then decide that they are comfortable this way and
fear any kind of change, even if it would mean a positive change.

As a chronic habit, stress is not very kind to the body or any body around us.

Will the World Really End on December 21, 2012?
by Jean-Claude Koven
I was recently asked how I interpreted the Mayan and Hopi predictions that the world, as we know it, will end on the 21st of December 2012. Would there be global war — possibly triggering a nuclear holocaust? Would the planet’s life forms finally succumb to the ecological quagmire that’s been building in our soils, oceans and atmosphere? Would the current steady increase of previously unknown diseases overcome our ability to defend against them? Or will we suddenly move into a new Golden Age in which the lion lies down with the lamb and struggle, pain, and suffering are gone forever?

____________________ Seven Simple Brain
Promoting Nutritional Tips
by Daniel G. Amen, M.D.
Here is the seven step plan to get your diet under control and to use food
as brain medicine.
1. Increase water intake
Given that your brain is about 80% water, the first rule of brain
nutrition is adequate water to hydrate your brain. Even slight dehydration
can raise stress hormones which can damage your brain over time. Drink at
least 84 ounces of water a day. It is best to have your liquids unpolluted
with artificial sweeteners, sugar, caffeine, or alcohol. You can use
herbal, non-caffeinated tea bags, such as raspberry or strawberry
flavored, and make unsweetened iced tea. Green tea is also good for brain
function as it contains chemicals that enhance mental relaxation and
alertness.

been living until now are molded according to rules and values that are not our own. Most of humanity is stuck in someone else's

____________________ Effectively Working with Affirmations
by Katheryn Hoban
In my years of teaching and counseling I have come to the conclusion that many people are unsure of what affirmations are, how to use them, what great tools they can be, or what good benefits can be manifested by working with affirmations in both children and adults. In the simplest form an affirmation is a statement of a positive effect, result, or of a future event that you would like to achieve. Usually an affirmation is stated in the present moment and in positive verbiage and wordage. For an example “ I can do this” as opposed to “I’d like to do this” or “I’m going to do this.” The sentence “ I can do this” is set in the present moment and it implies confidence in one’s ability to accomplish the task and an immediacy to take action. The statement “ I’d like to do this.” Implies that it is not quite possible but you are yearning to do it but (something out of your control) is preventing that.
“I’m going to do this” implies sometime in the future when all the conditions are right. In that case we can make an assumption that the conditions will never be right.

The 5 Hindrances Of The Mind: Are They Blocking Your Self-Esteem?
by Deborah Shipley
The issue of self-esteem is perhaps one of the greatest determinates in creating a life of freedom and abundance, or feeling inhibited and “just getting by“. Self-esteem is defined as “a feeling of pride in oneself“. It is how you feel in relation to yourself rather than how others see you. It’s between you and, well… you. Therefore, it’s not necessary to be so concerned about what others think to determine your level of self -esteem, as the definition does not include any “others“, just you. So where can you help yourself to better understand you? There are so many aspects of you but one that is of great importance is that of your mind.

____________________ Accessing Your Higher Mind
by John Holland
The more we stay connected to our higher mind - which we also call the
universe, the source, or spirit - the more we strengthen and build that
crucial bridge between ourselves and our higher consciousness. While we're
all born connected to this divine awareness, we have a tendency to pull
away from what was once natural. It's reasonable to assume that when we
become disconnected from our higher mind, the source that once nourished
us will be replaced with another source or substitute. In other words, the
connection could be with food, alcohol, nicotine, co-dependency to someone
or even work - hence the term workaholic. Many of us spend our lives
trying to fill that void which was created when the link was broken.

Why would we want to cultivate mindfulness in the first place? And why use particular methods and techniques, if they are all in the service of not getting anywhere anyway, and when, moreover, I've just finished saying that methods and techniques are not the whole of it anyway?

____________________ Break Through the Barrier

If we wish to find peace we must understand something of its life. Here
are a few such facts: Peace is the natural radiation of a living Now; it
is one with that Light whose life is the eternal present itself, even as
the emanations of light and warmth are one with the sun from which they
radiate. If our intuition can perceive that the above ideas are based in
truth, then we should be naturally moved to ask the following
question: If this peace we long for is inherent in this perfectly present
moment we call the "Now," what is it that keeps us from knowing
the fulfillment of its promise within us? Let's look.

whoever hurt you will eventually feel guilty about what they did, and come
begging for your forgiveness. Then you get to decide whether they deserve

Self hypnosis is usually thought of as a person listening to an audio

loss, stop smoking, etc. Unfortunately, this kind of hypnosis is generally
prepared by someone who has never met the person being hypnotized, often
presenting unwanted, even unpleasant imagery and suggestions. For example,
if you sunburn easily, that last thing you want to hear about is a slow
walk on a sunny beach. In this case, the "self" in self hypnosis
simply means that you listen to it by yourself!

are born into a two-parent, stable, middle-class household. Their parents
are educated, hardworking, caring, have no alcohol problems, abusive
habits, or guilty secrets. Aaron grows up successful--earns good grades,
wins a junior chess championship, plays sports, and later earns a good
income to support a family of his own. Charlotte does moderately well in
school but chooses unsavory friends, starts using heroin and other drugs,
turns to theft and prostitution to support her habit, which leads to jail
time and the hell of withdrawal.

Cried, Shivered And Shook!
The Physical, Emotional And Psychological Impact Of A Successful Past-Life
Regression
by Bob Olson, OfSpirit.com Editor
If you’re like me, you either
don’t believe in past-life regression or you simply don’t believe that
you can do it. Three years
ago, I would have fallen under the category of full-blown nonbeliever.
Today, after researching spiritual phenomenon for three years, I have no
doubts that other people can achieve hypnotic regression to a past life; I
just don’t believe I can
do it. At least that was my story until recently, after experiencing a
successful past-life regression of my own.

A Precision-Tuned Body
by Pat Burke
We often use the term stress to refer to
the negative effects of external factors such as noise, crowding,
performance expectations and deadlines. Most people experience stress as
something that happens to them. More accurately, stress itself is neutral,
referring to pressures on an organism or system. Health, adaptation and
evolution can be desirable outcomes when an organism is forced to respond
to a large amount and intensity of stimulation or change. An experience
that creates excitement and exhilaration in one person can cause deep
anxiety and debilitating stress for another. Anytime an organism is
overloaded, stress can occur, possibly followed by disease.

The "CSFT" Vitalistic Healing
Model
by Dr. Don Glassey
The principle of vitalism is based on the
holistic concept that the human body is greater than the sum of its parts.
Its basic assumption is that there is an intelligent force, which creates
and sustains all living organisms. This inherent vital principle is
distinct from all internal physical and chemical forces.

Getting
Started With The
Alexander Technique The Hard Way
by Jamee Culbertson, Dan Arsenault
and David
Arsenault
The irony is not lost on me. When I got the phone call from my
sister-in-law Laurie that my brother David had been in a bad car accident,
I was just getting ready for an Alexander Technique lesson with my
teacher, Jamee Culbertson. It was the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday, the
start of a four-day weekend. I’m sure I was not an apt pupil at that
lesson, but, on my way out, Jamee offered to see David as soon as he was
well enough.

The
Biology of Success
by Robert Arnot, M.D.
Mental energy is the basic foundation of
success. Look at corporate titans such as Michael Eisner, Martha Stewart,
and Jack Welch, or world leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, and
Margaret Thatcher, or super moms from Maria Von Trapp to Barbara Bush.
High mental energy is what they all have or had in common. Mental energy
is the brain's power supply -- the more power you have, the longer and
harder you can work. Compare your work output the morning after taking a
red-eye to that after a refreshing night's sleep. It's brain energy that
makes the difference. Click

Healing
Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection
by John E. Sarno
I have never seen a patient with pain in
the neck, shoulders, back or buttocks who didn't believe that the pain was
due to an injury, a "hurt" brought on by some physical activity.
"I hurt myself while running (playing basketball, tennis,
bowling)." "The pain started after I lifted my little girl"
or "when I tried to open a stuck window." "Ten years ago I
was involved in a hit-from-behind auto accident and I have had recurrent
back pain ever since." |
