You Can Create an Exceptional Life NEW!
An Interview with Louise Hay and Cheryl Richardson

Richelle Zizian, Moderator, Hay House: I'll start by saying a special thank you to Louise and Cheryl for joining us today to talk about the upcoming book "You Can Create an Exceptional Life" which releases in September. We're very excited that they've joined forces in what is, in my mind, a powerhouse of a book and it's a wonderful collaboration and extremely practical as well.

So let's go ahead and get started. Linda Joy would you like to start with your first question?

Linda Joy, Aspire Magazine: Sure I would love to. Louise one of the things you really stress in the book is beginning each day -- that the beginning of our day sets the tone for our lives. I'd love for you to go a little deeper into some of the things that we can do, that I can share with the readers that can really implement that, those steps in our life.

Avoiding the Parent Trap: How to Change Your Thoughts About Parenting Teens  NEW!
by Dr. John Duffy

It's hard to say how it started.

I know for a fact that we parent teens today with more fear, ego and judgment than calm, confidence and openness. There are countless theories as to why.

Maybe it's a lack of familiarity with their lightning-paced world of Facebook, texting and YouTube. Maybe we're worried about what other parents will think of our kids, or of us. Maybe the iron fist held more sway a generation back. Maybe we're working too hard to keep up with the Joneses.

Maybe the Tiger Mom is getting to us.

Regardless, the fact stands; once our children cross into the teen years, many of us become jittery, angry, withholding, terribly confused parents. So what's going on here?

Refuel: Bring Sleep into Your Night NEW!
by Ashley Koff, RD, and Kathy Kaehler

Life as a mom is a shapeless blob of happy chaos. ~ Julia Roberts

What your body does from the time it slips into bed to the time it wakes you up might have more to do with your energy metabolism than you realize. New findings in sleep medicine are currently revolutionizing how we think about the value sleep brings to our lives.

For so many moms we interviewed for this book, sleep ranked high on the list of priorities. Chaka Khan calls sleep “the key to a great energy balance”; Julia Roberts admits that any extra sleep she can get helps counterbalance the “mom struggle” that naturally accompanies having time thieves running around her house. Most of us just don’t get the sleep we need. Sleep deprivation is epidemic. And let’s face it: When we’re sleep-deprived, moody, and things don’t go our way, we can begin to go down that dreaded path that ends in depressive thoughts or a full-blown depression.

Secrets For Sensitive People To Find Relationships That Work
by Judith Orloff MD

Loneliness gets to some more than others. But why it hangs on isn’t always apparent when read by traditional medical eyes. In my medical practice and workshops I’ve been struck by how many sensitive, empathic people who I call “emotional empaths” come to me, lonely, wanting a romantic partner, yet remaining single for years. Or else they’re in relationships but feel constantly fatigued and overwhelmed. The reason isn’t simply that “there aren’t enough emotionally available people ‘out there,’” nor is their burnout “neurotic.” Personally and professionally, I’ve discovered that something more is going on.

Born to be Free
by Dzogchen Ponlop

Rebel Buddha is an exploration of what it means to be free and how it is that we can become free. Although we may vote for the head of our government, marry for love, and worship the divine or mundane powers of our choice, most of us don't really feel free in our day-to-day lives. When we talk about freedom, we're also talking about its opposite -- bondage, lack of independence, being subject to the control of something or someone outside ourselves. No one likes it, and when we find ourselves in that situation, we quickly start trying to figure out a way around it. Any restriction on our "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" arouses fierce resistance. When our happiness and freedom are at stake, we become capable of transforming ourselves into rebels.

Do You Have Inspiration Deficit Disorder?
by Jonathan Ellerby, Ph.D

Do you feel stuck in one or more areas of your life? Do you lack the time to regularly renew yourself and enjoy your interests? Are you relying on caffeine, anti-depressants or alcohol to manage your stress and emotional well-being?

If so, you might be suffering from Inspiration Deficit Disorder.  An inspiration deficit occurs whenever we feel unfulfilled or somehow unexpressed in an important aspect of life – something is missing; a job we don’t like, a struggle with self image, a relationship we aren’t satisfied with, are all examples of where we may feel an inspiration deficit. When we let these deficits persist they translate into, addictions, bad habits, poor health, and high stress –sadly, most people have it to some degree and it impacts their health and happiness more than they know.

The Power to Never Feel Powerless Again
by Guy Finley

In one way or another, we often feel “trapped” by life. If it weren’t true, we wouldn’t spend as much time as we do trying to “escape” our circumstances. We’re so involved with imagining and swimming to our own Fantasy Island, we never consider this important question: what if the condition we wish to escape were only an illusion that feels real? How would such a realization change our lives?

How Probiotics May Stop Stomach Pains, Alleviate Esophagus Problems & Control Stomach Acid

Louis Pasteur was the Mick Jaeger of nineteenth century science. And, rightly so.

But, rock star that he was, he made the words "bacteria" and "bacterial" synonymous with disease.  This misconception is still with us today. The truth is that some bacteria can actually help you alleviate esophagus related problems, stop stomach pains and control stomach acid.

Premonitions and Spirituality
by Larry Dossey, M.D.,

Spirituality involves an awareness of being connected with something greater than the individual ego or self. This "something greater" has traditionally been called God, Goddess, Allah, Great Spirit, the Almighty, the Absolute, and many other names. Some consider it as the Universe, or as a sense of infinite order and beauty. Many individuals prefer to attribute no name whatever to it. But whether named or unnamed, the awareness of a connectedness with something greater than the "I" has been a source of strength and meaning for individuals throughout human history.

Addressing Our Economy With Spirit
by Trish Whynot, D.C.Ed.

The worst thing that could happen to our economy–and to ourselves—is to allow economics to rule our souls. Joy feeds our souls and when times are tough or scary, the first menu items to go are often those that bring us the most joy. Even when these items don’t cost anything, our tendency is to go into self-deprivation mode. We tell ourselves that we don’t have time for the things that bring us joy because we are too busy trying to survive. Our fear says we must choose between survival and joy. While that may seem the “logical” solution, starving our souls won’t heal our economy.

Today, more and more people are being asked to face what may seem like insurmountable challenges: a diagnosis of a serious illness, job loss, or a divorce, not to mention children who find themselves drowning in troublesome seas. Add any one of those to the fast pace of our lives, multitasking a myriad of roles and responsibilities, and we have a recipe for stress levels that can soar, taking us into the stratosphere of chaos.

Condition Yourself to Love Unconditionally
by Mary Jo Shaffer

Even in the healthiest of relationships, opportunities abound to find fault, criticize or "tweak" the other person no matter whether we are talking about a mate, a child or a friend. Most of us were raised in an environment where rather than focusing on the positive, we were taught to zoom in and dwell on the negative. Breaking that habitual way of thinking is a matter of conditioning our minds to refocus and learn to love with abandon, without any requirements, without any rules and without any limitations.

Here is our list of top ten ways to condition yourself to love unconditionally.

Beyond Self-Image

A few years ago, I was fixated on overcoming what I saw as my “negative self-image.” Basically, the problem was that I wanted to do certain things I thought would be enjoyable and fulfilling, but I was afraid of doing them. I wanted to start my own business, make more of an effort to meet people, take up more “extreme” sports, and so forth, but I would feel anxiety when I’d contemplate doing those things, and would find myself holding back.

Just as physical DNA can be turned on and off by attitudes, beliefs, nutrition, and environment, the same is true of our spiritual DNA—it too can be turned on and off. Our spiritual DNA is activated when we are living in accordance with our true Self—such as when we are attentive to our choices; when we strive to find ways of compromising, seeking solutions to problems that used to send us over the moon; and when we hold back anger and rage until it calms—and we calm—and find a wiser way to proceed.

When you are doing that work, you are following your higher path, and your life will be filled with increasing joy, abundance, and well-being. Finding your life’s work allows you to create abundance and money easily. The job or activities that are meant to be your life’s work involve doing what you love with your time and energy. When you love what you do, you feel alive, happy, and fulfilled. You radiate joy and draw many good things to you. You can make money doing work that you don’t like, but it will take more effort. The Path of Unconditional Happiness
by Michael A. Singer

The highest spiritual path is life itself. If you know how to live daily life, it all becomes a liberating experience. But first you have to approach life properly, or it can be very confusing. To begin with, you have to realize that you really only have one choice in this life, and it's not about your career, whom you want to marry, or whether you want to seek God. People tend to burden themselves with so many choices. But, in the end, you can throw it all away and just make one basic, underlying decision: Do you want to be happy, or do you not want to be happy? It's really that simple. Once you make that choice, your path through life becomes totally clear.

The Truth About Happiness: An Interview With Michael Bernard Beckwith
by Arielle Ford

At the heart of the desire for money, fame, and power is a deep longing for happiness. While Amazon.com boasts more than 200,000 titles on the subject of happiness, it appears that Americans are still searching for it. In the new film LIVING LUMINARIES (On the Serious Business of Happiness), filmmakers Michael Lasky and Larry Kurnarsky illuminate the path to human happiness by presenting concepts about living in the now, as well as, providing thought provoking ideas about consciously choosing love, gratitude, honesty, forgiveness, patience, and kindness. The film follows a young seeker as he interviews an A-list of swamis, shamans, rabbis, ministers, Tibetan monks contemporary thinkers and best-selling authors such as Marianne Williamson, don Miguel Ruiz, Eckhart Tolle & Michael Bernard Beckwith, founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles. Beckwith, who is also one of the stars of THE SECRET, has had a busy year with appearances on Oprah, Larry King Live and many other national TV shows. We recently caught up with him to discuss his thoughts on LIVING LUMINARIES and the subject of happiness.

Falling Out Of Religion and Into The Arms Of God Part ll

Why Being Authentic is So Difficult
by Peter G. Vajda, Ph.D, C.P.C.

Why do we find ourselves struggling so often to be who we really are? Why is it so challenging to show up authentically? Why do we wear masks, and assume personalities of actors that hide our True and Real Self? What brings us to be fake and phony so much of the time?  The kicker is that everyone is born authentic. What happens is that, beginning with childhood and moving through adolescence and into adulthood, we spend countless minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years separating from our innate, authentic, natural and spontaneous self. And, along the road, we become confused. “Who am I, really?” becomes the operative question.

Honor The Feminine In Us And In Others
by Stephen Ruppenthal

One day this past winter, I decided to take in a talk on the Buddhist mother of compassion, Kuanyin. Interested people, and not only women, flooded out the doors of the bookstore where it was being held. I asked myself, why do other talks barely fill the room while this one has a line flowing out onto the street? A good guess might be that people are sick of living in a world in which masculine aggressiveness and control have run roughshod over more feminine qualities like love, patience, or a feeling for healing and harmony. I believe many more people wish that qualities like gentleness, tenderness, patience, receptiveness, closeness to nature, and the readiness to forgive were more valued in our world. Let’s start right now with five ways all of us, men and women alike, can honor and cultivate the qualities of our feminine side.

I feel like I’ve lost my sense of me – of who I am in the midst of it all.”

Trying To Avoid Anna Filaktik: A Day In My Life With A Deadly Allergy
by Bob Olson, OfSpirit.com editor

Having once lived in Los Angeles, Melissa and I love to return now and then for a visit. The last time we were there, we stayed in a quaint little condo in Santa Monica that was within walking distance of a cool outdoor shopping area called the Third Street Promenade. And within this grouping of hip stores are several restaurants, including one that I particularly like called Johnny Rockets--a 1950’s style hamburger joint that unintentionally almost killed me. We were vacationing with our two nieces, ages 15 and 17, and the four of us sat down at a table outside the restaurant that overlooked the vacationers and street musicians. After ordering a #12 hamburger with fries, I decided to get a chocolate malt to really set the mood. And this is where my problems began.

Happiness as a Priority
by Richard Carlson, PhD

It’s always been interesting to me that the average person (go ahead and ask them), spends ten times (or more) the amount of time watching television than he or she does even considering happiness. In fact, in one pole that I conducted, not a single person out of more than 30 people admitted to spending even one second thinking about how they might go about becoming happier! Some of these people spent anywhere from 2-7 hours a day in front of a television set, yet not one minute contemplating what could amount to the most important question of one’s life—how can I be happier? One of the first rules of any venture is that in order to get somewhere, you need at least a general idea of how to get there and, at very least, where you are going!

I have always desired to know God—to have a personal, living, breathing relationship with my Creator. At the same time, I didn’t even know what God was. I was taught that God is some supreme being who judges me for the way I live my life, and in the end decides if I am worthy to enter into the gates of Heaven or banished to the fires of Hell.

We live in a world that is obsessed with looking beautiful and young, and maintaining perfect health well into our older years. But youth is short. As we gradually age, panic can set in as the increasingly inescapable loss of our physical beauty fills us with fear. Once we pass our early thirties, most of us aren't as attractive as we may have once been and our vitality begins to slip away. We realize how much less frequently people notice us and smile at us on the streets—and when they do look, it isn’t with admiration or appreciation but with something else.  As the inevitable truth sets in and we are faced with this loss of youth, all of us a profound fear that we will be left behind.

Find Your Center and Reach Your Goals for 2007

The New Year is a time to wipe the slate clean. With heartfelt zeal, we can earnestly make a new start. As the great Zen master Suzuki-roshi used to say, we contact what is called the beginner’s mind, a real hope for keeping new resolutions about ourselves. Of course it’s great to post such resolutions in your office or on the refrigerator, keeping them right before you as you strive for personal change. But if you really want to stop being late or to cease yelling at your husband,  your willpower will flow more constantly if you find your inner center and practice the new pattern of behavior from your heart. Since change is so hard, particularly in areas where we have shown considerable weakness, here are five helpful ways to find our center within ourselves and hold fast to the new behavior we want in the New Year:

Are Secrets Spoiling Your Spiritual Life?
by John Howard Prin, LADC

As an addictions counselor, I often see people who want to grow spiritually but who are using addictions as shortcuts to their goals. Over the years I've identified two major conditions that persons trapped in addiction claim for staying addicted: boredom and misery. These misguided folks persist in heavy drinking, compulsive shopping, internet pornography, shoplifting, eating disorders, and more in order to achieve the mood change from negative emotions that they seek — in order to escape from their boredom or pain and achieve what feels like a spiritual high. Unfortunately once the high disappears, what is left is shame, guilt, remorse, and disapproval from the important people in their lives. This tends to lead to secrecy. Avoiding the shame, guilt, and remorse is a whopping challenge in itself and failure, or refusal to even try, is rife. About one-third of the clients whom I see actively steal hours away from their public lives, including home and work lives, to indulge in their hidden addictive habits — secretly attempting to reach transcendence from reality.

Living a balanced life may conjure up images of balanced scales, being a “superhuman”, feeling even-keeled and in control. This is a great myth, yet a perceived road map to many for finding balance.

Taoism and Sexuality
by Rachel Carlton Abrams, M.D.

Taoism is a spiritual tradition that embraces our sexual desire and uses it within our bodies as a force for healing and spiritual growth. Desire is a rich and potent part of our human experience. The Taoists think of desire, called sexual energy or jing chi, as part of our life energy, or chi. To be passionate is to be full of chi. The English words "desire" or "passion" connote a feeling of yearning and fervor that includes sex, but they also reflect our strongest feelings about life. When we are passionate about anything--our family, our work, our spirituality, an important social cause--we are investing our chi in this experience. Our passion is what moves us to action and ultimately is what gives us joy. We are passionate about the things that matter most to us.

Parenting as a Spiritual Path
by Gloria Deckro

The step into parenthood is an initiation in the truest sense of the word — a huge leap into the unknown. We suddenly find ourselves with 24-hour a day responsibility for another human being who is totally dependent on us. As the task unfolds we discover that we are called upon to be teacher, provider, disciplinarian, healer, spiritual guide and friend. Our children test us, they call on us to face unhealed baggage from our own childhood, and they inspire us to dig deep for resources that we never knew we had. Ultimately our mission is to support and guide them to the point where they can leave us and move on. As Kahil Gibran says to parents in his book The Prophet, "Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself…You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth."

Going It Alone: The Path of Single Parenting
by Linda Marks

... As someone who was just doing what needed to be done, I was aware of how stressful my life felt at times. However, I rarely stepped back and saw the picture of reality Helena was painting. Far more poignant was the larger reality that many, many people - women and men alike - face these very challenges each day in a society where nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. How many parents live with incredible stress - both inner and outer - as they juggle countless pieces, trying to keep everything together, creating the best life they can for themselves and their children, but probably not the life they imagined having when they were a little girl or little boy?

Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer
by Patrick C. Walsh & Janet Farrar Worthington

What is the prostate? The prostate is a small, and probably expendable, organ. Men can live quite comfortably without it. The prostate's biggest job, as far as we know, is to provide part of the fluid that makes up semen. But even this contribution does not appear to be crucial for reproduction—which is why some scientists think the prostate's main role may be to safeguard the reproductive tract from infection in the urinary tract. (In fact, its name in Greek means "protector.") It is not a vital organ. Thus, the major importance of the prostate is not what it does, but what goes wrong with it—the problems it causes to nearly all men who live long enough.

Twenty-five million people crippled by nausea, intolerance of light and sound, sweating, double vision, bright spots before their eyes, numbness and tingling in the face and hands, confused thinking, slurred speech, weakness of the limbs, diarrhea, chills, sometimes auras, and always pain—that horrible pain that never seems to end. Some people consider themselves lucky if the terrible pain vanishes in a mere four hours, for migraines often last ten hours or more. And some throb on for three or four days!

In cancer care there are two complementary goals of treatment. One, the usual medical goal, is to kill cancer cells and tumors, or reduce their numbers and their ability to grow, reproduce, and spread (metastasize). The other, perhaps best called the healing goal, is to support the well-being and resistance of the patient. Here I use resistance to stand for all the mechanisms, known and unknown, that protect us from the development and dissemination of cancer.

Indeed, based on the pure ideals that we are taught as a child, this might appear to be the case. However, the corporate culture is not the "real world" in which we live out our personal lives. Each corporate culture is its own world with its own rules and reality. To understand this, one must understand the directions and desires of this world and learn how to best adapt to achieve the vision and mission of the corporation.

She insists that they had a misunderstanding, that it was actually all her fault, that he didn't mean to actually hurt her. I have heard this so many times that I don't have energy left to argue with it. I just tell her I'm sorry, and I send him away. I try not to glare at him as he sits there. I try not to look at him at all. She is sixteen years old, and she is carrying his baby, and he beat her with a metal belt buckle. And I am tired, so very tired of this same story.

Coli bacteria is the most common cause of urinary tract infections, bacteria can also enter the urinary tract via the blood stream that feeds the kidneys and cause an infection. It can also be introduced through the insertion of medical instruments such as a catheter.

I call all this happiness. When, again, I eat the same sweet, and hear the same music when a tragedy has occurred in my life, I don’t enjoy it. If my relative has passed away, and if someone plays the same music that I like most, I will say: ‘Stop it! I hate this!’ The same music fails to bring joy and happiness.
