Trapped: How Our Thoughts Increase Our Suffering
There’s so much talk these days about staying in the present
moment. But, sometimes, it’s not that easy in times of stress. Yet, if
we were able to remain present when things go wrong, it would certainly
relieve us of unnecessary suffering. The following true story is a perfect
example.

Guilt-Free
Mindfulness
by Sue Patton Thoele
Mindfulness is being aware of yourself, others, and your surroundings in
the moment. Well-known mindfulness teacher, Jon Kabat-Zinn, defines
it this way Mindfulness means paying
attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and
nonjudgmentally. I also like to think of mindfulness as the art
of inhabiting your own life
with kindness and acceptance.
When first entertaining the idea of practicing mindfulness in a conscious,
committed way, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I absolutely
believed that I would love the peace of mind and sense of balance that
those who practiced mindfulness seemed to enjoy. On the other hand, I
groaned inwardly at the thought of adding yet another guilt-inducing
"should" to an already full schedule. Two different things
tempered my concerns and helped me make a wholehearted commitment to the
practice of mindfulness. One was noticing how calm, accepting, and
humorous people were whom I knew practiced mindfulness regularly. I wanted
more of that appealing equanimity and joy. The other realization was a
semi-embarrassing "Duh!" Instead of making mindfulness a
guilt-inducing chore, I could simply choose to make practicing mindfulness
a joy and celebrate each small step taken.

Beyond
Self-Image
by Christopher R. Edgar
A few years ago, I was fixated on overcoming what I saw as my “negative self-image.” Basically, the problem was that I wanted to do certain things I thought would be enjoyable and fulfilling, but I was afraid of doing them. I wanted to start my own business, make more of an effort to meet people, take up more “extreme” sports, and so forth, but I would feel anxiety when I’d contemplate doing those things, and would find myself holding back.
I used to think this meant my unconscious mind had an “image,” or perception, of me as someone who didn’t or couldn’t do those activities. My mind, I believed, was refusing to allow me to act inconsistently with that image. I didn’t know how I’d developed my self-image—maybe it was genetic, a childhood event, not enough Vitamin C in my diet, or something else—but the fact remained that it was there. Thus, I was focused on finding a way to improve my self-image—to convince my unconscious mind to view me as someone capable of taking up the challenges I wanted to face. If I did that, I thought, anxiety would no longer keep me from achieving my goals.

Having
Money
by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer
Money is neither good nor bad; it is energy. It is the way money is used that determines whether or not it is a positive energy that will benefit you and others. If you come from the highest level of integrity with your money, if you make it in ways that benefit people, through shifting their consciousness, or through serving and making a contribution, by giving your best, honoring others, and putting attention and consciousness into what you do, you are making a contribution to humanity and to yourself. When you use money in ways that serve your higher purpose and bring you and others joy, you are creating money of light. The more money is made and spent with integrity and light, the more it becomes a force of light for
everyone.
True abundance is having all you need to do your life’s work — the tools, resources, and living environment — and to live a life filled with joy and aliveness. Abundance is not an extravagant, glamorous style of living maintained purely to impress others or one that does not support your true aliveness and life’s work. Part of the essence of spirituality is the belief in true abundance — of time, love, and energy. You teach others by setting an example. It may be hard, if not impossible, to help others lead abundant lives if you do not have a feeling of abundance about your own life. You do not want living at a survival level and experiencing lack to be the examples you set. When you have the right amount of money and money works in your life, people will learn about abundance from your example.

For us to change the beliefs that have
led to war, disease, and the failed careers and relationships of
our past we need a reason to see things differently. Our ancestors
used miracles to change what they believed. Today we use science. The
Spontaneous Healing of Belief offers us both: the miracles
that open the door to a powerful new way of seeing the world, and
the science that tells us why the miracles are possible,
revealing: why we are not limited by the “laws” of physics and
biology as we know them today.
Once we become aware of the paradigm-shattering discoveries and
true-life miracles, we must think of ourselves differently. And
that difference is where the spontaneous healing of belief begins. |
This month our friends at Hay
House have provided us with three copies
of Gregg Braden's newly released book The
Spontaneous Healing of Belief.

Written for general consumers, not for enviromaniacs, Green Guide is chock-full of simple, useful ideas, broken down into achievable steps that make "going green" a gradual and affordable process rather than an all-or-nothing plunge.
We as a nation are ready to go green. We get it. The climate is changing and human activity is a major cause. If billions of people are going to live on the planet, natural resources need managing, and waste will be a major concern. And all around us are new technologies, products and practices that will soon replace the crude, energy-wasting, resource-depleting path we've been on.
If only everyone knew what those were.
That's what the Green Guide is for—to find those new products and practices and share them with you. One of the most important ways to protect the planet is through consumer environmentalism: buying and using things—from the food you eat to the clothing you wear to the cars you drive—with an eye on the resources required to make them and the waste they will become.
As simple as (we hope) they sound, the tips and ideas you'll read about have a lot behind them. Each assertion we make about the potential hazards of products and practices has been documented in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Our writers and editors are painstaking in their research and are held to high standards by a separate team of fact-checkers. And we're working from a deep base of knowledge: The Green Guide has been writing about environmental consumer issues since it launched as a newsletter in 1994.
In creating the first-ever issue of Green Guide magazine, we've kept an eye on our own footprint. First, we offer an electronic version of the complete magazine, true to every page. In our printed magazines, the paper mixes post-consumer recycled paper with new pulp from wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which holds foresters to rigorous standards. The inks are made without heavy metals. And the Green Guide, like National Geographic, is meant to be a keeper, a tool kit for going green.

June 20 - June 22, 2008: The Presence Process:
A Healing Journey Into Present Moment Awareness |
| Following Michael Brown’s simple step-by-step Presence Process, using techniques previously available only to spiritual adepts, we become empowered to heal the ghosts from our past and live liberated lives, right now.
Brown leads us on an animated journey to retrace the entry of our awareness into our current experience of the adult world. Focusing specifically on the energetic condition of our heart, then and now, we observe how it is reflected in our moment-to-moment mental state and physical condition. We then learn to use emotional body awareness to heal the wounds of the heart that negatively impact our daily life.
Reawakening our authenticity, integrity, and intimacy, the heart work of the Presence Process allows us to effortlessly and joyously participate in every moment.

July 4 - July 6, 2008: The Bodhisattva, the Peaceful Spiritual Warrior:
10 Transformative Practices for Enlightened Living |
| The bodhisattva is the ultimate social and spiritual activist who dedicates all of his or her life and lifetimes to the highest good for the greatest number—transforming oneself, transforming the world.
In this retreat with Surya Das, one of the nation’s foremost Buddhist meditation masters, we learn the Buddhist’s 10 principles of enlightened living, known in Sanskrit as the “10 paramitas” (10 transcendental virtues). These virtues show us how to become the best self and truest noble being that we can be through this sacred path of awakening our innately good, warm heart and enlightened mind.
Through meditation, self-inquiry, discussions, chanting, and question-and-answer sessions, Surya Das shows us how to bring the boddhisattva’s ways of enlightened living into our daily life at home, at work, and in our communities. Beginners to meditation as well as longtime practitioners are invited.
