Halloween,
It's More Than You Know
by Lynn Kent
There is a great history surrounding the American Halloween custom as we know it today. It is one of the world’s oldest holidays and is celebrated in many countries around the globe.
Celebrations honoring the dead are found as far back as ancient Egyptian times. In my experience as a medium, I have found it very important that those who have passed before us be remembered in whatever way we choose. Many spirit loved ones have important information or knowledge to pass on, as well as just to let someone know they are alright and are still with you.
The Celtic festival of Samhain (sow-in) on November 1st is the Celtic New Year. Northern France, Ireland and the United Kingdom are now what was once Celtic territory over 2000 years ago. This is the time that marked the end of summer, the harvest and the beginning of the dark cold winter, a time that was associated with human death.
Celts believe that the night before their New Year, October 31st, marked the boundary between the two worlds and became unveiled or blurred, enabling the Druids or Celtic priests to make predictions about the future. To honor and pacify their dearly departed, they lit bonfires, feasted, wore costumes and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes, which was an important source of comfort during the long harsh winter. When the feasting was over, they re-lit their hearth fires from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming of winter. This wonderful Celtic holiday has been turned into “All Saints” day honoring saints and martyrs.
“Trick-Or–Treating” the American way has its routes in European and Celtic traditions. In the 7th century, England’s Pope Boniface IV decided to make November 1st “All Saints Day”, coinciding with the Celt new year. The ‘soul cake” was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice of “going-a-souling” was eventually taken up by children visiting homes in the neighborhood. The wearing of masks was designed to keep ghosts away from those who ventured out on this night so the spirit would not recognize them. By wearing spirit or ghost masks, the Celts believed they would be mistaken for fellow spirits.
In the late 1800’s, Americans molded Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get–togethers. By the 1930’s, Halloween had become a worldly and secular holiday, centered around the community with parades and town-wide parties. Between the 1920’s and 1950’s, the century old practice of trick-or-treating (going-a-souling) was revived.
In Mexico, “The Day of The Dead” has been celebrated for many centuries starting on October 31st and ending on November 2nd. It is designed to honor the dead (where it is believed they return to their homes at this time) and the children, their continuity of life. It is celebrated by visits to the grave, feasting, talking of the departed and passing out candy skulls or masks for the children. This holiday was originally celebrated sometime in July by the Aztec calendar. Since the arrival of Christianity to the New World, it was decided by religious organizations to be moved to the time of ‘All Souls Day”. It is celebrated in Mexico, Latin America and Spain. It really does not matter where or when, as long as our dearly departed are remembered.
In the calendar of the Women’s New Year or “Hallowmas”, it is the time of the Goddess “Hecate”. This is the time of ancestral worship and the time for all to draw near the Goddess. It is a time for women to make changes, to clear out the old and welcome the peace and rest that the coming winter has to offer. It is a day the Goddess offers wisdom and protection.
As women of the 21st Century, our lives are different yet, in many ways, much like those of our ancestors. We marry, have children, care for those we love, yet many of us run businesses or work full-time jobs and more. We don’t always give enough time and attention to our family, children, grandchildren, others we love or ourselves. So this Halloween, make it a point to put your children and ancestors first. In this way, you will see that you have also done something for yourself. It is a holiday worthy of your effort, for your dearly departed as well as the generation to come.
Follow the traditions of past generations, and have a house party with your children and family members. Bob up and down for apples, give a prize for the best costume, tell stories of your relatives who have past, tell ghost stories if you choose, or have a psychic or medium contact your loved-ones in the Spirit Realm. It is all about honoring family, past and present, and reviving the “Halloween” traditions.
No matter what your background or decent, there should always be time to remember those who have departed. Whatever way you choose to teach your children to honor their grand parents, great grandparents and loved ones that we cannot see, is acceptable. There are many ways to teach children about life after death and the true meaning of Halloween, as it is universally known --honoring those in Spirit. Spirits are not to be feared, they are your relatives -- friends and loved ones who once walked this earth. Know they are here to help you in Spirit, as they did when they were with you on this physical plane.
