My
Heart To Yours

"Honey, if you die first will you please contact me when you get to
wherever you go next?" About two years ago this question sparked a
lively discussion between me and my late husband, Larkin. Each of us had
our own unique belief system created by our life experiences. We shared
them fully that day and very completely disagreed on the subjects of life
after death and especially of "spirit communication".
I have always been intrigued by the concept of spirit communication.
Having been a regularly scheduled singer in the local Spiritualist
Churches since 1992, I have witnessed many "mediums" giving
messages from loved ones on the "spirit side of life". I have
had readings by a several mediums and have made my own judgments about
their capabilities. Actually, one of the mediums I went to years ago told
me I would meet my then future husband and described him quite well. Soon
after that reading I had a dream in which he appeared. From my memory of
that dream, I KNEW when we met 6 months later that he was the one. All of
these instances contributed to my growing belief in the validity of spirit
communication.
As Larkin and I discussed the possibilities it became clear to me that his
beliefs did not at all match my own. He imagined that when he died he
would lose all concept of his physical life and that he would, in essence,
cease to exist. There would be nothing. He would be "turned off"
forever and be absorbed into the energy of everything, therefore would not
be able to "contact" anyone because we would have no identity,
no personality, no mind or thoughts. Well, as you can imagine, we went on
for a couple of hours back and forth trying to sway one another into
agreement. This was to no avail. I finally said to him, "Okay, when
you die and you find out I'm right," (tee, hee) "promise me you
will find a medium and contact me." He agreed he would and we came up
with what he would say so I would know with absolute certainty that it was
him.
There is a Pillsbury commercial at the end of which is a little jingle
"My Heart to Yours". He used to sing it to me all the time with
his glasses pushed down on his nose and his big sparkly blue eyes giggling
at me. He would put his hand on his heart and sweep it out toward my
heart. I loved that so much every time he did it. So I said, "Okay,
when you find the medium that's what your message will be so I will know
without a doubt it is you."
A little over a year passed, and during this time Larkin's health
deteriorated slowly. He suffered from heart disease (had quadruple bypass
surgery in 1988), pulmonary hypertension, diabetes, fluid retention, and
congestive heart failure all exacerbated by a continuous fight against
food addiction and obesity. It was a very painful journey for both of us.
After numerous hospitalizations beginning in December 2001, Larkin
suddenly took a turn toward death and on May 25, 2002. I sat by his side
and watched his spirit leave his body.
Two days after he died I had a wake followed by a memorial service here at
our home in Wrentham. I sent a notice around by e-mail because it was
Memorial Day weekend and the newspapers couldn't get the notice in on
time. I have a huge e-mail list and on it are my students and many others
I don't even know. There was a very large turnout of support. During the
service many people shared their love and caring through songs, poetry,
letters and other sharings. Midway through the service a man named Maha'al,
whom I had never met, stood up and said he had a message that Larkin asked
him to deliver to me. Now even though I believe spirits can communicate I
was not sure I wanted it to happen in front of a lot of people. Especially
Larkin's family who I would call definite skeptics. But I asked the man to
proceed.
Not coincidentally earlier that morning I had been trying to remember,
without success, exactly what we agreed Larkin would say. Anyway, Maha'al
said Larkin was standing next to him. He said some things Larkin asked him
to. One thing he said was, "The short one is still with me."
This was Mary, a friend who was with me at the hospital when Larkin died.
I brought her with me specifically for his spirit to have assistance
leaving his body. Mary is an incredible spirit worker and healer. At the
end of his very short messages, Maha'al put his hand on his heart, swept
it across the room in a grand gesture and said "Larkin now says 'my
heart to yours'." Well, if my mouth didn't drop wide open and at the
same moment a flood of golden light entered me. I have never felt so much
joy in my life. I will never again doubt that spirits can communicate with
us.
Later Maha'al told me all about his experience that morning. Larkin
telling him to come. He had told Larkin he had the wrong guy but Larkin
insisted that everyone at the service would know we didn't know him.
Larkin also promised Maha'al that if he did this for him he would give him
the gift of his favorite song.
After Maha'al gave me the message one of my students started singing the
"Alleluia" sung to the tune of the Pachabel Canon. The whole
room spontaneously broke out in 3-part harmony. It sounded like a choir of
angels. Maha'al almost immediately began to weep uncontrollably. That was
his favorite song he played in times of despair and he was in need of
connecting with God's love. The woman who started singing it said later
that the song had been "playing over and over" in her head all
morning long. Larkin was very busy that day!
I offer this story as very powerful, positive evidence that our loved ones
who have died are most definitely with us. For me, it gives me great
comfort to know that when I call out his name, he hears me and comes to
help in any way he can.
