Miracle Under My Pillow

I am a sixty year old man. Life has treated me, like most people, both well and poorly. I have lived a relatively healthy and productive existence. On the other hand, before I was even fifty years old, I lost my father, mother, an uncle who was like a second father, and my only son at the tender age of seventeen. I survived each of these tragedies and was made stronger and more determined to find a spiritual reality that offered more than death and sorrow. I have always believed there are many paths to God and I had pursued many different spiritual ways over the years, even before all of the losses, but had never experienced that personal connection with my Creator that I so longed for. About a year ago, that all changed.
I have never been very creative. About the best I could ever do was to come up with the occasional sappy love poem for my wife on our anniversary. For the majority of my life, I survived and thrived on the basis of my organization, common sense, and rationality. So you can imagine my astonishment when one night I was awakened at exactly 3:33 am with a poem that simply would not go away. Like everyone else, I dream. But I had never dreamed in poetic terms and most certainly never expected to be pushed to write one in such an insistent manner in the middle of the night. Yet I somehow knew that I must do what was being requested, especially if I ever wanted to get back to sleep. I got out of bed, wrote the poem down, and promptly (and gratefully) went back to sleep.
The next morning, I picked up the poem and decided I would see what all the fuss was about, and was I surprised. I would have never thought, in a million years, to write anything remotely similar to the poem I now held in my hands. And if I thought that was a shocker, I had only to wait a couple of days to find out there was more, much more. Since that night a little over a year ago, I have received over 600 poems; a few more in my sleep, and the remainder during early morning meditations. Most of those 600+ poems, along with a novella that came the same way, have now been published in five books. So essentially, I went from being a technology manager to a writer and spiritual poet, virtually overnight!
There is also a story within the story. Many of these poems came in a unique storytelling style that exemplified spiritual precepts and lessons as well as many more that challenge the way we (myself included) see the world. That very first poem, titled Nicobod and Ichobod, set the tone for those that would follow and I have included it here to illustrate of what I speak.

Nicobod & Icobod
Nicobod and Icobod went up the hill
Through the valley and round the bend
They went high and they went low
They went to and they went fro
From here to there they went
Looking up and fell down
Looking for good and evil found
Searching for truth, looking for peace
Til they came upon a stone
A large obstacle in their way
They pushed and shoved
They pulled and prodded
But the stone remained
And ever will, until they know
Where lives the stone
And its refrain

The remaining poems consist of stories with spiritual messages, prayers, tales of oneness (a prevailing theme), challenges to fixed and arbitrary beliefs, and what I like to call intentional absurdities. They defy the ordinary in a very real and profound sense and I believe they will appeal to all thinking and serious spiritual students, regardless of the path they pursue.
So this is my story; the story of a man in his gray years whose life was completely changed by these gifts. Yet another of these odes will explain it best.

Freed Mind
Stuck in a pigeon hole
For such a long time
All organized so neatly
Setup to fall in line
With the accepted way of thinking
Along the party lines
Accepting and assimilating
All of it put forth
By media, government, and demagogues
The law according to mediocrity
The brain without its source
Going along to get along
Afraid to rock the boat
Til it wrangled me to my roots
And grabbed me by my throat
Made me question everything
The common and obscene
Turned my world upside down
To see what could be seen
The underbelly was displeasing
The fear and guilt unredeemed
But digging through the mud, I find
A tiny open seam
I unraveled and I parted it
To find a mind, now freed

From a place long forgotten
An ancient hymn comes through
Touching my heart with love
Meant for me and you
One we sang together
Many long time ago

The angelic choir, our accompaniment
The universe, our stage
Singing love to our Father

Trust me, I am not trying to get my poems published here; I’ve already done that. I have included them as part of this story because they are the story. They are what has changed my life and turned an increasingly skeptical elderly man into a hopeful, renewed, and inspired storyteller and poet with something significant to share with the world. If I do nothing else with my life after it and these poems have run their course, I will be a happy and contented man.
