Ask Psychic Medium Laura Scott
by Laura Scott
Dear Laura,
I am a 62 year old grandma having a
terrible time forgiving my mother and sister for some awful things that
happened to us in the past, including sexual abuse. They continue to
dismiss my attempts to discuss things and bring them out into the open.
Contact with them is full of barbs, denial and pain. I have done a lot of
work on myself to heal and understand, and yet this last piece with my
family is still very hurtful. How can I ever get peace and move on?

Time Out of
Mind
by Eric Shapiro
Let us first consider the role of time in our lives, then let us consider
that role in terms of mental illness. Buddhists and Hindus, among
others, propose that time does not actually exist. The Western
world, however, with its dependence on clocks and deadlines, scoffs at
such a notion, relying upon sayings such as "Time is money" and
"Time is of the essence."
Time is of the essence. What an expression. Its inherent
suggestion is that time comes from our essences; time exists within our
souls. This is consistent with the Western position that time was
discovered rather than created. Then again, the question haunts us:
what if we did, in fact, create time? What if all our ticking clocks
and watches amount to nothing more than a symbolic quest for orderly and
coherent living? It's a terrifying yet convincing idea.

Breast Cancer, There And
Back: A Woman-to-Woman Guide
by Jami Bernard
Chemotherapy and/or radiation
therapy are two types of treatment commonly given to breast-cancer
patients in addition to surgery. The surgery physically removes the tumor,
while the chemo and radiation kill off stray cancer cells that may still
be lurking in the area or have traveled through the lymphatic system
to other parts of the body. If you have picked up this book, then not only
are you preparing for chemo and/or radiation treatments, but you are also
exhibiting extraordinary literary taste, and for that I congratulate you.
Getting chemo isn't a walk in the park, but
on the scale of things that make me nauseous, it still beats a tax audit.
There are fabulous new designer drugs available to help you get through
chemo (some patients don't ever throw up!), whereas if you are audited,
very few drugs will alleviate your pain.

The introduction in this wise book mentions
something that author David Kuhl learned from his years of working with
the terminally ill: "I didn't know how to talk to them about
dying." In What Dying People Want, Kuhl shares his education
on this topic by focusing on the daily experience of patients who are
learning how to broach such discussions with their caregivers and families
while coming to terms with their own mortality.
Heart-wrenching personal stories are
intertwined with practical suggestions, and specific instances are
frequently used to illustrate techniques, processes, and the importance of
telling your story, rather than assuming your family already knows it.
Kuhl focuses particularly on coming to terms with one's past. Discussions
of family histories, lifelong priorities, and difficult choices are
emphasized as tools for making peace among family members and with one's
own conscience.
The daily life of pain management and
support groups is also covered in detail, and Kuhl offers plenty of
suggestions on how to begin that difficult conversation in which death is
first acknowledged as a rapidly approaching fact. Written for patients and
caregivers as well as friends and family, this useful guide will help
everyone involved navigate the twists and turns of terminal illness.
