Sound,
Music, & Medicine
by Julianna Souza, RN, HNC, HTP.
Recently I have been delighted to observe
an increased emphasis on music and sound as a medium for healing. Perhaps
because music has been an integral part of my life I am more keenly aware
of this phenomena. On occasions when I have felt my soul inspired by a
particularly beautiful piece of music, I have realized that I would
literally wither if music were not a part of my daily life. For me, music
assumes many forms and I am as deeply touched by the musical sounds of
nature as I am by a beautiful concerto.
Many cultures recognize the importance of
music and sound as a healing power. In the ancient civilizations of India,
the Orient, Africa, Europe and among the Aboriginals and Native Americans,
the practice of using sound to heal and achieve balance from within has
existed for many years. The Tibetans still use bells, chimes, bowls and
chanting as the foundation of their spiritual practice. In Bali,
Indonesia, the echoing gamelang, gong and drum are used in ceremonies to
uplift and send messages. The Australian Aboriginals and Native American
shamans use vocal toning and repetitive sound vibration with instruments
created from nature in sacred ceremony to adjust any imbalance of the
spirit, emotions or physical being. The priests of ancient Egypt knew how
to use vowel sounds to resonate their energy centers or chakras. This
practice is called toning. There is a direct link between different parts
of the body and specific sounds.

Flower
Essences In A Nutshell
Flower essences are actually
liquid concentrates—usually preserved in alcohol or vinegar—of flowers
that have been soaked in spring water. It is intended that one dilutes
only a few drops of the flower essence in water to drink, or the drops can
be applied under the tongue. For some, the drops may be applied to the
skin or in a bath if there is reason not to ingest them (due to the
alcohol, for example). Flower essences are based on the concept that they
hold aspects of the flower’s energy, thereby affecting the energy field
of the person taking them. In this way, flower essences can be used to
treat both physical and emotional issues and disorders.

Rolfing®...
What Is It?
by Sharon Sklar
"I hear that it's painful."
"I don't think she could take it!"
"I want bodywork
that is less invasive."
This is a lot of what I hear when people
share what they think about Rolfing®. It is my observation that the general
public has the wrong idea of what this work is all about. Educating people
about Rolfing® is a very rich and inspiring part of my job. I have been a
Rolfer® for over 15 years.
What most people don't know is that Rolfing
is gentle, safe and effective bodywork that can help people get
"unstuck" in a hands-on, attentive, loving and conscious way. It
is supportive, direct and educational. It is becoming more widely accepted
as a powerful tool that allows the body the opportunity to regain balance,
freedom, movement and ease. I recently worked with a client who was told
by her chiropractor that she "wasn't ready for Rolfing" and that
it was too rough for her. She trusted her own "gut" feeling
after we had spoken on the phone, got Rolfed and became pain-free after
many years of chronic discomfort.
Why did that chiropractor think Rolfing
wouldn't be good for her? Why do people think it's painful? What is
Rolfing anyway?
Rolfing is a ten-session series that
loosens up and re-organizes the soft tissue of the body. This tissue
includes muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, which is the thin
membrane that holds the body together...

Changing Our
Relationship With Food
by Barbara L. Holtzman

How do you decide what and when to eat? Because it's
lunchtime? Because someone brought donuts to the staff meeting? Because
you're tired or bored? Most of us eat based on external stimuli rather
than our own physical needs and food preferences. Many of us don't even
know when we're hungry or comfortably satisfied. If our urge to eat is
usually triggered by external situations such as the time of day or the
availability of food, we may lose the awareness of our body's messages of
hunger. If eating is our primary coping mechanism for dealing with
uncomfortable feelings, we may never experience physical hunger since we
are medicating ourselves with food before we even experience the
sensations of hunger.
For those of us whose physical needs for
food have been overshadowed by our desire for a smaller body size, we have
probably ignored our body's signals, counting on a diet, rather than our
body's wisdom or our personal preferences, to tell us what to eat. When we
eat from the "outside" instead of the "inside," it is
normal to rebel by eating formally "forbidden foods." To change
our relationship with food, we need to develop what Tribole and Resch
describe in their excellent book with the same title, Intuitive Eating.
Intuitive eaters make food choices without feeling guilt; they honor their
hunger, respect their fullness and enjoy the pleasures of eating.
Alongside the plethora of diet books are a growing number of excellent
books describing this approach by Geneen Roth, Hirschmann and Munter and
Susie Orbach, among others.
If you'd like to change your relationship
with food, you might want to experiment with the following suggestion...

Do We Have Control
Over Our Lives
Or Is Life Simply Determined By Fate?
The Automatic Writing Of Robert Irving
[Automatic Writing is a process of shutting
your conscious mind off to allow your unconscious mind to take over your
writing—allowing
your higher-self and/or spirit-guides to write (communicate) through you.]

Robert: Do we have control over our
lives, or is life simply determined by fate?
Answer:
There are two issues at stake here: that which we have control over, and
that which we have no control over. Wisdom is knowing the difference.
You
have more control over how your life develops than you may think. If
people did not have this control, there would be very little point
in having the human experience. So, you do have self-control over your
life. This means you have choices. For the most part, choices are the
catalyst for change. You can choose to change or choose to be dormant.
Even the choice to do nothing is a choice—the act of doing nothing.
Choices are the reason we take on human form. However there are certain
events in life that are not in your control. A traffic jam is one example.
An earthquake is another. These are the situations you find yourself in
that allow you to make choices. How you act, how you handle yourself in
any given situation is your choice. This will dictate what direction your
life will take. But these circumstances for which you have no control are
your testing grounds for making choices. Here you can discover how you
have grown according to which choices you make. Here you can change your
life in an instant according to the choices that you make.
Of
course, one choice that leads you in a direction that appears unpleasant
is not necessarily a bad choice. Change often feels uncomfortable or
unpleasant. Exercise is unpleasant to some people—especially those who
need it most. Therefore, the results of their choice to exercise may at
first appear unpleasant—aching muscles, sore joints, etc. But the choice
to exercise is a positive choice for change unless you overdo it from the
start. Balance is the key, of course.
When
stuck in a traffic jam, you have many choices. You can take that moment to
relax. You can appreciate the moment of time you have to slow down and
realign yourself with the present moment. Or you can elevate your blood
pressure, yell at the other drivers and pound your fist into the
dashboard. Are we making sense to you, Robert?
Yes, that makes a
great deal of sense.
When
we follow our intuition, that is the best way to make right choices.
Intuition is your higher-self guiding you toward the best choice. Can we
make “wrong” choices, you ask? Yes and no. A wrong choice is only
wrong because you will suffer for it. There is no punishment; usually the
action that follows the choice is the suffering. Getting angry and
pounding your fist in a traffic jam is the suffering. The choice you made
was to get upset at this event of which you had no control. So the choice
wasn’t necessarily wrong. But there was a better choice—using the
moment to find peace within yourself.
