Sleepless In America
by Joan Borysenko
If you don’t get enough sleep, it’s hard to be kind, keep your priorities straight, and just keep on keeping on. Yet, in a 24/7 society where you can order everything from underwear to tents from mail-order houses in the middle of the night, sleeplessness is becoming endemic. It’s been cited as the nation’s number-one health problem. We’re sleeping, according to the experts, 20 percent less than our peers did a hundred years ago.
Busy people, say the researchers, are apt to scrounge more time for work by sleeping less. I’ve done that when big deadlines loomed, and managed pretty well for a couple of days,
but then I hit the wall. I have friends who actually boast about how little they sleep. It gives them a perverse kind of pride: “See how busy I am? I must really be important.” Maybe. But I know that both their work and their families suffer when sleep is sacrificed to the god of commerce. And their lives are shortened as well. Those who sleep less than six hours a night die sooner than those getting seven hours or more.

Dare To (Not) Compare: One Secret To Aligning With Your Highest Potential
by Jeffrey Brownstein
I was talking with a friend today. We were having this nice, empowering conversation, sharing ideas - and then we started analyzing another mutual acquaintance (already sound familiar?). Nothing terrible, but my friend astutely pointed out when our focus started slipping more toward the other person's shortcomings, and suggested we shift the discussion back to our own affairs. I, of course, being a (sometimes defensive!) Law of Attraction coach tried to validate the merits of our digression, saying there was no malice in our words - that we were just using the other person's behavior as a vehicle for learning. Thankfully, my friend wasn't completely buying in.
Talking about others is not the issue here by itself. People naturally come up in our thoughts and conversations, and it's entirely normal to reflect on them. The distinction arises in our tone of observation, in the way we feel. When we view others in kind, accepting, and complimentary light, good feelings are prevalent, and our vibrations are high. It's when we plunge into negativity and nit-picking that our vibrational levels take a turn south.

Winter,
Weather and Weight Loss
by Judith J. Wurtman, PhD, and
Nina Frusztajer Marquis, MD
All other things being equal, you are more
apt to feel positive and energetic when the sun is shining, the sky is
blue and the temperature in the comfort zone. But for many people, when
the weather turns gloomy, they stop losing and may start to gain weight.
In fact, often the longer the bad weather, the more pounds are
gained.
Some of the reasons are obvious. Exercising
outside is hard when rain is coming down in sheets or there is a windy
snow storm. Extremely hot and humid or brutally cold conditions also
prevent most people from considering and especially enjoying outside
exercise. Eating suffers as well from unpleasant weather. Snacks and
hastily thrown together meals substitute for well-planned menus when it is
too hot to stay in the kitchen. Conversely, hearty (a.k.a. high fat) foods
are more appealing than salads and broiled fish when the snow is blowing
and icy drafts sneak under windowpanes.

In this revised edition, #1 New York Times bestselling author and nationally known stress-management consultant Dr. Richard Carlson reveals a profound breakthrough in human psychology. Most of us believe that our happiness depends on outside circumstances, that by solving our problems, improving our relationships, or achieving success we will find contentment. But Dr. Carlson clearly shows that happiness has nothing to do with forces beyond our control — in fact, he says, it is our natural
state.
With this simple and practical guide, Dr. Carlson shows us how to be happy now, before we solve our problems. By understanding five principles — Thought, Moods, Separate Realities, Feelings, and the Present Moment — we can discover a new mode of living that doesn't repress natural emotions yet doesn't allow feelings and thoughts to overwhelm us.
You Can Be Happy No Matter What is a navigational tool that gently guides readers through life's challenges and restores the joy of living.
“A most important book that shows us in practical terms how to remove the blocks to the awareness of our natural state, happiness.”
~ Gerald G. Jampolsky, MD, author of Love Is Letting Go of Fear
“A needed counterbalance to the therapy junkie’s tendency to wallow in ‘processing’ while life’s beauty passes them by.”
