New simpler blog style for a new simpler life
I started blogging February 11, 2006. My blogs began as 500 words or less. They were simple comments about life, vignettes of lessons I’d learned. At this early stage, blogging was fun because it was quick and easy to do; it was an intimate way to communicate with my online audience. Yet the problem began when my readers, including friends and family members, began to comment on how much they enjoyed my latest blog entry, and the feedback encouraged me to write more.

Addressing
Our Economy With Spirit
by
Trish Whynot, D.C.Ed.
The worst thing that could happen to our
economy–and to ourselves—is to allow economics to rule our souls. Joy
feeds our souls and when times are tough or scary, the first menu items to
go are often those that bring us the most joy. Even when these items
don’t cost anything, our tendency is to go into self-deprivation mode.
We tell ourselves that we don’t have time for the things that bring us
joy because we are too busy trying to survive. Our fear says we must
choose between survival and joy. While that may seem the “logical”
solution, starving our souls won’t heal our economy.
We need to ask ourselves what brings us
joy, and to distinguish those things from what merely boosts our egos or
impresses our neighbors. Anything that brings forth joy connects us in
some way with Spirit: it inspires us, expresses us or lifts us up. But
this is an area in which we must practice discernment—to distinguish
between things that genuinely nurture the soul and those that merely act
as a substitute for spiritual enrichment. At the same time, it is
important to realize that what one person uses as a status symbol can be a
genuine source of joy to another. That which feeds soul is fulfilling
while that which feeds ego creates debt.

Finding
Peace Amid the Chaos
by Janice Lynne Lundy
Don't
you just love it when life throws you a curve? Just when you think you can
rest on your laurels, or take a break from life's intensity, you are dealt
another “something” to deal with. Today, more and more people are
being asked to face what may seem like insurmountable challenges: a
diagnosis of a serious illness, job loss, or a divorce, not to mention
children who find themselves drowning in troublesome seas. Add any one of
those to the fast pace of our lives, multitasking a myriad of roles and
responsibilities, and we have a recipe for stress levels that can soar,
taking us into the stratosphere of chaos.
Like
many of you, I am fairly adept at the circus act we call life: juggling
more balls than we can feasibly handle, all the while hoping that we are
doing a decent job of it. It's when one more ball is thrown into our
finely tuned balancing act, and we are asked to maintain the same rhythm
and performance as before, that trouble sets in. For me, this manifested a
few years back when I was feeling a bit under the weather, so I decided to
pay my internist a visit. He gave me the surprising diagnosis of high
blood pressure. This juggler had too many balls in the air and she was
teetering, the balls were beginning to tumble to the ground all around
her. What was I to do? Medication was
a probable solution to my situation, but that would be addressing only the
symptomatic part of the problem. This diagnosis felt to me like a wake-up
call; a signal to find a sense of balance in my life so that I could
return to a place of peace within me that had somehow disappeared.

A New Era Of
Hope
by Kari Samuels
Right now I am looking at
the sticker I have on my desk that I kept from Election Day.
I'm saving it to commemorate this historic event.
On this sticker, it says, "I voted today 11.4.08".
I am looking at these numbers and marveling at the incredible story
they tell us about this epic presidential race.
These numbers, 11, 4 and
8 are playing out over and over again in this saga and speak of the
fateful nature of our new era. Looking
at what they reveal, you can rest assured this will be a time of dramatic
(if not turbulent) change, as well as prosperity, stability, unity and
diplomacy.

"One day, a few
years ago, when I was seated on an airplane awaiting takeoff, I
was watching the flight attendant demonstrate how to fasten our
seatbelts, locate and inflate our life preservers, and properly
use our oxygen masks. I was suddenly struck by her instruction to
'place my oxygen mask on myself BEFORE placing it on someone else'
as a metaphor for life. 'That's so true,' I thought; 'We can't help others if we have neglected to care for
ourselves.' And it was this poignant metaphor that echoed in
my head while reading Cheryl Richardson's new book, The Art of
Extreme Self-Care.
Richardson's book teaches that there's nothing selfish about
taking care of yourself first before being of service to others.
Moreover, in an age of rampant martyrdom, Richardson encourages
her readers to be more selfish, and she has 12 valuable lessons
for doing so. My favorites: Honor my sensitivity as a gift (not a
weakness), and; Be willing to disappoint people when saying Yes
means self-sacrifice, deprivation and/or anxiety.
I, personally,
felt Richardson's lessons spoke directly to me, as I believe most
people will. Please note, as well, that I'm a man; this book is
not written only for women. Anyone who finds themselves doing more
for others (your spouse, boss, children, relatives, friends) than
you do for yourself will benefit from reading this book. And,
despite it's depth of insight, it is brief enough to read in a
weekend, or, better yet, one chapter a month, as is intended by
the author to fully integrate each lesson into your daily life.
Per Cheryl Richardson's usual format, she not only explains the
lessons but provides step-by-step suggestions on how to fully
benefit from them, plus gives books and websites for further info.
With all that's happening in our lives and the world these days, I
can't think of a more valuable and appropriate book to teach us
how to care for ourselves in order to be of optimal service to
others. Most highly recommended."

| "I'm no tarot
reader, but my wife and I have been using John Holland's The
Psychic Tarot Oracle Deck as a daily intention guide (asking
'What should I pay attention to today?') by choosing one card a
day, and the results have been uncannily positive, meaningful and
accurate. Of course, for those interested, the hefty little
guidebook that comes with the deck offers a brief guide on how to
use the cards. My point being that non-tarot users like me can
appreciate these cards, too.
I, personally, love the gold ridge
that outlines the deck (giving it a rich feeling), the detailed
attention of the artwork (each card evokes an emotion within me
that further mirrors a message), and the thorough explanation of
each card in the guidebook (to help the psychically-challenged,
like myself). This is an elegant tarot deck that I believe tarot
readers and non-tarot readers alike will fully enjoy."

"People commonly mistake struggle for the nobility of rising to
meet a challenge. But there is a distinct difference. While
wrestling with our challenges, we may feel at times we're
struggling; in taking on any real challenge, we gain energy that is
expansive and life-giving. Overcoming a challenge transforms us and
rewards us with a sense of accomplishment. Struggle drains energy
because it's pointless. It robs us of life-giving purpose. Struggle
feels like drowning or spinning our wheels in deep mud."
~ Ernest D. Chu
Soul Currency
"The symptoms and the illness are not the same thing. The
illness exists long before the symptoms. Rather than being the
illness, the symptoms are the beginning of its cures. The fact that
they are unwanted makes them all the more a phenomenon of grace--a
gift of god, a message from the unconscious, if you will, to
initiate self-examination and repair."
~ M. Scott Peck
The Road Less Traveled
"Even with our differences
There is a place we're all connected
Each of us can find each other's light,
There's so much to be thankful for."
