NEW JANUARY 3 - JANUARY 10, 2004
A New Years
Resolution: YES or NO?
by Dave Turo-Shields, ACSW, LCSW
I've
heard it said that by the end of January, over 90% of individuals who make
New Years resolutions don't remember what they were. Why is this so?
People
are often sincere, however, they are not yet in the right place for big
changes in their lives. Many others want to continue same behaviors,
such as eating the wrong things, and still reap the rewards of increased
levels of energy and weight loss.

Learning How
To Fall ... You Have To Learn To Fall Before You Can Ride With Confidence!
by Edward B. Toupin
About a month ago, I was hit by a car
while riding my motorcycle. The car side-swiped me and took off.
My bike bounced off the car, shot out from under me, and I rolled under
the car. Amazingly enough, I stood up, picked up my bike, and got to
the side of the street without any problems. All I had was a small
bit of road rash on my elbow. I was lucky!
However, I'm not writing this to acquire oohs and ahhs, but to discuss one
important lesson I learned from this incident that applies very well to
life in general. The basic lesson I learned here was that, now that
I am confident in hitting the ground and surviving, I have actually become
a much better rider. Of course, they do say that there are only two
types of motorcycle riders --- those who have gone down, and those who
have not.

Healing The War Between The Genders is a groundbreaking book
offering both new ways to think about and tools to heal an age-old human
drama.
Linda Marks adeptly discusses what she
calls a "cultural heart wound" as being at the center of the
gender struggle. In this context, the struggle actually transcends
heterosexual relationships, gender role conflicts and particular
one-to-one dynamics. Since each person has what are often called male and
female energies, "the war" is a much deeper struggle about how
to best blend these energies using head and heart. As the deeper struggle
is healed individually and culturally, we give birth to what Marks calls
"soul-centered relationships."
The healing that is required is related to
what Marks calls "the traumatized heart." Referencing important
research about the electromagnetic field related to the heart, Marks shows
that heart-focused healing is not just a metaphor. Real things are going
on between people, between the genders, at an energy
level--heart-to-heart, heart-to-head and head-to-head. Marks embraces and
provides valuable perspective on some of the hard questions related to the
"war between the genders," exploring how to "honor the male
heart," how to "hear the female heart," how to
"integrate sexuality and spirituality," how to "prevent the
gender wars in the next generation," and how to "restore
essential connections" to nature, soul, relationships, community and
God.
Complete with exercises, meditations and
diagrams, Healing The War Between The Genders provides a hands-on
resource the reader can rely on. Psychology and author Margaret Paul says
about this book, "It is time to move out of the power struggles that
characterize most relationships and into compassion and true partnership
with ourselves and each other. This book facilitates partnership between
head, ehart and soul, and creates the sense of community that we need to
heal the male and female heart wounds that create such a distance between
us."
Economist and author Hazel Henderson calls Healing
The War Between The Genders, "Timely and truly heart-warming.
Deeply experienced interpersonal wisdom that can help evolve more
appreciative relationships--and help re-design more caring economies and
win-win societies on our small endangered planet."
