The Naked Truth: Weight Loss and Our Relationship with God NEW!
by Trish Whynot, D.C.Ed.

Since each of us is at one and the same time a physical and spiritual being, everything in our lives, every problem we confront, has both a physical and spiritual aspect. Even those things that seem simply physical in nature, such as our bodies, are in truth also spiritual.  It makes sense then that if we go deeply into our relationship with our physical selves that we will soon find ourselves in the realm of spirit. At the root of everything lies our relationship with God[1]. We find Him wherever we look, even when we look into our most bodily selves as we struggle with weight

A spiritual approach to any pursuit—even one as seemingly mundane or material as weight loss—always brings us to a deeper truth. Some people who have an aversion to God or religion are drawn to this deeper truth, while others who profess to be spiritual are secretly avoiding the truth. We can be in denial or unaware of the existence of God or of truth, but that doesn’t diminish the existence of either.

Don’t Buy Into These Exercise Myths
by Larry Goldberg

The past decade or so has seen an explosion of research about nutrition, exercise and the human body. Some of this research has confirmed what we already knew—things like, a healthy diet and regular exercise make you live long and prosper.  Some research, however, has proven that some “common wisdom” about exercise is just plain wrong.  Here are ten myths that you don’t want to buy into.

I Have a Body: Health for Your Body, Serenity for Your Soul
by Lisa Barstow

The Buddhists tell us that we have a body but we are not our body, a mind but we are not our mind, an ego but we are not our ego. I wish that I had heard this fifty years ago, but at age eleven I was stressed about budding breasts, a period that was my big present on my birthday that year, and trying to please my dear thin mother who could already see that I wasn’t built like a Vogue model.

Memory decline is a common complaint as we move through the aging process. The typical 60-year-old is not as sharp mentally as they were in their 40s. That said, some people do age slower than others. There are 80 year olds with the mind and body of people decades their minor. There are 70 year olds who can easily match wits with 40 year olds.

Boost Your Immune System for Wellness and Healing

The immune system is the first in the body to react, integrate, resolve and evolve. It is a highly integrated system using resources from the entire body to orchestrate its general and specific roles. As we age, the immune system picks up the pace on behalf of the organ systems' decline in efficiency. Proper nutrition can have a profound effect on the immune system when it is battling disorders associated with nutritional deficiencies or conditions interfering with the body's use of nutrients.

Overcoming Worry: The Calming Power of Exercise
by Bob Livingstone LCSW

There are a lot of us that spend too much time worrying. According to The National Institute on Mental Health, approximately 40 million American adults ages 18 and older, or about 18.1 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety prevents us from being happy, can cause physical ailments, and keeps us from taking healthy risks that may improve the quality of our lives.

Sleepless In America
by Joan Borysenko

If you don’t get enough sleep, it’s hard to be kind, keep your priorities straight, and just keep on keeping on. Yet, in a 24/7 society where you can order everything from underwear to tents from mail-order houses in the middle of the night, sleeplessness is becoming endemic. It’s been cited as the nation’s number-one health problem. We’re sleeping, according to the experts, 20 percent less than our peers did a hundred years ago.

Winter, Weather and Weight Loss
by Judith J. Wurtman, PhD, and Nina Frusztajer Marquis, MD

All other things being equal, you are more apt to feel positive and energetic when the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the temperature in the comfort zone. But for many people, when the weather turns gloomy, they stop losing and may start to gain weight. In fact, often the longer the bad weather, the more pounds are gained.

How do you feel when you wake up? Do you lack energy and fear facing the new day ahead? Are you stiff, lacking flexibility, feeling pain in your joints?

How do you feel throughout the day? Do you feel exhausted by 9:30 in the morning? Even more drained in the afternoon? Are you unable to concentrate or think clearly?

Fitness Through Yoga; A Prescription for Seniors
by Mish Volonino

Everyday the media bombards us with new information and medical evidence to support the claims on the benefits associated with physical activity as it relates to aging. Our primary care physicians urge us to participate in some form of physical fitness. Baby Boomers are the fastest growing population. Soon, the largest segment of the Americans will be 65 and older. According to statistics from the National Institute on Aging, 60% of the adult population leads a sedentary lifestyle. The reasons for not exercising are many, but for older persons, fear of hurting oneself is the hardest obstacle to overcome. Becoming pro-active with exercising increases the odds of living a longer, healthier, happier and more active life.

The realization hit Natalie like a ton of bricks. Her mother, Joann, had literally died of embarrassment! Joann had noticed blood in her stool almost a year before she was diagnosed with colon cancer. At first she told herself it must have been those beets she ate. Are All Diets Unhealthy?
by Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., and Nadine Taylor, M.S., R.D.

Want the short answer? Yes. Now, you may be thinking, "If I don't stay on some kind of diet, I'll just blow up like a balloon. I need to be on a program just to keep control of myself." But consider that any kind of dieting involves a diet mentality, which ensures failure, encourages you to ignore hunger and satiety signals, and promotes a negative relationship with food, because you have to give up "forbidden" foods and, often, eat foods you don't really like. This inevitably results in giving in, which often means bingeing and feeling terrible about yourself. So, though this idea may sound radical, we firmly believe there is no good diet.

Eat at the Right Time of Day
by Felicia Drury Kliment

One to two hours after eating dinner at 6:30 in the evening, Bob and Amy Gerahty used to come down with acid indigestion. Although they didn't go to bed until 11:00 P.M., the symptoms lingered, preventing them from getting to sleep. They blamed their indigestion and insomnia on the food they ate for dinner. Their typical evening meal consisted of red meat, mashed potatoes with butter, salad, and a vegetable. Having heard so much about the harm a diet heavy in red meat and saturated fat can do to the heart and arteries, they became convinced that the food they had for dinner was at the root of their digestive problems. So they switched to chicken, fish, and polyunsaturated oils, but it didn't ease their indigestion. No matter what they ate for dinner they got acid reflux afterward. The years passed and they continued to lie awake at night with painful esophageal and stomach problems.

The Power Of Touch: A Basic Human Need for Health and Healing
by Linda Marks

The presidential elections of November 2004 poignantly illustrated “the great divide” that has grown between people in our country. I read countless statistics in both the Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe analyzing voter composition. I saw charts that separated those who favored a candidate with high intelligence from those who favored a candidate who advocated a sense of morality. I saw other charts differentiating those who favored a candidate who would protect us against terrorism from those who favored a candidate who cared about the environment. After reading chart after chart, it would be easy to believe that all these issues are indeed separate and unrelated, just as are the factions of people who either supported or disagreed with each position.

Allergy Season: How to Cope
by Ben Lynch

The sun’s warmth bursts forth flowers and pries open leaf buds. Spring’s beauty is welcomed by all except those prone to allergies. A release of histamine triggered by allergic substances causes a runny nose, itchy eyes, post-nasal drip and congested head. Reducing histamine is what needs to be done, and most likely, a run to the store for an over-the-counter anti-histamine is what occurs. While this may work for the short term, it does not address the cause of allergies.

Eco-Technologies-- In Harmony with Nature
by Christan Hummel

Energy shortages, power crises, petro-chemical pollutants, ozone depletion, hazardous waste, nuclear radiation, bioengineered crops - these are all the nightmares of a technological world raging forward against natural laws. In the midst of this technological onslaught, we have become conditioned to believe that technology is the inherently evil nemesis of nature forever destined to be Yin and Yang at incompatible odds with one another. Our modern society perpetuates this belief that one must be sacrificed for the other. This belief has left available only the illusory options of either abandoning the "urban" life for huts in the forest, and cots in the ashram, or supporting a society which plunders natural resources to sustain the modern lifestyle of our unabated modern day consumerism.

Are You Suffering From Hypothyroidism?
by Dr. Rita Louise

When someone is experiencing hypothyroidism the thyroid gland is impaired, producing too little thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is due primarily to a dysfunction of the thyroid gland itself. If the thyroid gland is removed, obviously, the body is unable to produce any thyroid hormone. If the thyroid is partially removed, it may be able to produce enough hormones for a while, but over time it can become overworked and burn out. But the thyroid can also become impaired for many other reasons.

The Exact Reason Why Cardio is Essential: Avoiding The Starvation Response
by Johnny Lavot

Cardio, Calories, and the Starvation Response

Most of the time, when someone decides that they want to lose fat, they inevitably head for the nearest fad diet. However, 95% (closer to 100%) of the time, these fad diets fail. The reason they fail is because exercise is rarely incorporated into the program. In order to lose fat, there must be a deficit of calories in the diet. In other words, your body must use more calories than you eat in order to use its fat stores for energy. This seems simple enough; however, it becomes a bit more complicated.

Water As A Spiritual Element
by Annie B. Bond

Water is the central source of our beings. It is part of every cell and fiber in us; it is our very essence. Could water be the common denominator that weaves us all (earth, animal, human, and plant) together as one? Is it the ultimate connector? It's awesome and humbling that water carries so many entrained messages, especially when we consider that there has been the same water, and the same amount of water, on the earth for millions of years. What messages are we receiving from our ancestors when we drink? And it is overwhelming to think that in the past 60 years alone, the human hand has imprinted so much pollution on the water, bringing it out of healthy balance. It is our spiritual obligation to be water's caretaker and cause it no further harm.

Yoga has a threefold impact on health. It keeps healthy people healthy, it inhibits the development of diseases, and it aids recovery from ill health.

Why Water Is The Key To Detoxifying Your Body

Water is, quite literally, the river on which our good health flows. Water carries nutrients to our cells, aids digestion by forming stomach secretions, flushes our bodies of wastes, and keeps our kidneys healthy. It keeps our moisture-rich organs (our skin, eyes, mouth, and nose) functioning well, it lubricates and cushions our joints, and it regulates our body temperature and our metabolism, just to name a few of its many functions.

Weight Loss: Unrealistic Expectations Can Cause Failure
by Caryl Ehrlich

Weight gain is an evolutionary process. Some people call it creeping weight. The scale turtles inexorably upward – a tight skirt, a belt notch, a can’t-zip-up-my-pants inch at a time. Yet you expect the scale to go down as rapidly as a high-speed elevator. This erroneous thought pattern – practiced and perfected as with any bad habit – is an unrealistic expectation. Dangerous to be sure with any endeavor, but deadly when it comes to weight reduction.

Protein is a vital nutrient, essential to your health. In its purest form, protein consists of chains of amino acids. There are 22 amino acids that combine to form different proteins, and 8 of these must come from the foods we eat. Our body uses these amino acids to create muscles, blood, skin, hair, nails and internal organs. Proteins help replace and form new tissue, transports oxygen and nutrients in our blood and cells, regulates the balance of water and acids, and is needed to make antibodies.

I dance and life weights but tight muscles and recovery time limit both activities. I'm feeling frustrated so I decide to investigate Pilates, wondering if there's something for me there.

The Little Pilates Book
by Erika Dillman

The fact that dancers and movie stars swore by Pilates just made me more suspicious. I'd seen too many infomercials in which Hollywood celebrities hawked every type of "miracle" gadget meant to tone abs, butts, and thighs... "in just three minutes a day!" And who can trust dancers, anyway? They can do things with their bodies that we normal people could never imagine. Pilates was just a passing fad. It wasn't for me. Or so I thought.

Demystifying Acupuncture: A Personal Encounter With The Mysterious Cures Of Acupuncture
by John Herlihy

Utter the word acupuncture in polite company and images of oversized needles and Chinese doctors searching for a crucial nerve may come to mind. At best, people may think of acupuncture as a medical cure effective for others, but not for themselves. At worst, the instinctive horror of needles, like the terror of the dentist’s drill, puts people off any thought of approaching this alternative source of medicine without a second thought. In the medically advanced Western societies, many people even consider this ancient traditional wisdom to be a raw and radical new alternative to the progressive, techno-based Western approach to medicine. Perhaps the time has finally arrived to demystify the aura of uncertainty that still surrounds the modern-day practice of acupuncture.

Last November, on a whim, I took my first yoga class while at my fitness club. I didn’t know it at the time, but I’d walked into a class led by a teacher of Anusara Yoga, which means, “flowing with Grace,” or “following your heart.” The teacher said things like, “scoop the tailbone,” “let your heart shine out from the pose,” “inflate the kidneys,” “inner spiral the thighs,” and “watch your shoulder loop.” Confused, exhausted and drenched in sweat, I loved every minute of it.

Fail-Safe Ways To Shatter A Strength Plateau
by Frank Klesitz

Training Frequency
Aggressive strength training for several weeks takes a toll on your neuromuscular structure. To allow time to heal and time to GROW, it is best to reduce your training frequency. For example, if you were to train the chest three days per week, reduce the frequency to twice a week. This will allow for ample time for your muscles to fully repair.
