Kinesiology: Treating The Body Through Muscular Biofeedback

Did you know that your body is an energy system? You actually have measurable current running through your body all the time. Energy medicine, a part of the holistic health care system, works to release any blockages in your body’s energy system. This balances the system, and allows the body to function the way it was designed to.
The world of holistic health care, sometimes known as complementary and alternative health care, is getting bigger and bigger, and can be somewhat confusing. In Western medicine, if you don’t feel well, you go to a general practitioner. The general practitioner then sends you on to see a specialist based on what part of the body has the problem. Doctors specialize, breaking the body down into the smallest pieces, and know more and more about less and less. This is a reductionism idea.
In a sense, holistic health care puts the body back together. It looks at the whole person – body, mind and spirit -- as one entity, with inter-connecting parts that cannot be addressed individually. Holistic health care also puts you at the center of your own well-being. You are encouraged to do what you can for yourself – eat nutritious food, get plenty of rest and exercise, and reduce the stress in your life. But sometimes these things are impossible to do, or they just aren’t enough and you need outside assistance. Where do you go? Holistic practitioners are not a substitute for western doctors, but they can be helpful in conjunction with traditional medicine or as a first resort before you head to the doctor.
One modality of holistic health care that has been gaining in popularity is Energy Kinesiology. It was actually started by a Chiropractor in the 1960s in the United States. George Goodheart brought together Eastern and Western ideas and created Applied Kinesiology. John Thie, also a chiropractor, felt that lay people could do some of the techniques themselves to help their family and friends, without having to go to medical school.
What makes energy kinesiology different is its use of muscle monitoring. Muscle monitoring is a biofeedback mechanism that lets the client’s body tell the practitioner where the stress is in the body and what it needs to get balanced. All imbalances in the body -- physical pain, illness, depression, anxiety, learning problems, etc. --are caused by stress in the body. When the body is under stress, it causes an indicator muscle to go weak because of the neurology involved, muscles provide a direct link to our subconscious mind (where a lot of survival programs run without our knowing it and therefore keep us stuck!). The practitioner as well as the client can feel this change in the muscle. The practitioner doesn’t diagnose or prescribe, just assess stress.
Muscle monitoring gives the practitioner information about the stress and how to balance the body. Basically it takes out the guess work. You don’t have to rely on the practitioner to find the cause of the problem. Your body tells the practitioner what is the cause and what it needs.
Since the 70s, energy kinesiology has grown and developed into a complete system with many aspects based on what the person’s needs are. Energy kinesiology actually utilizes other holistic modalities such as reflexology, the acupuncture system, sound, light, flower essences, massage and others.
Your body actually has the ability to heal itself. But sometimes, due to stress, it is blocked and needs help to find and correct the blockage. That is what the energy kinesiology practitioner does – facilitates your body to heal itself.
