A-Z of Holistic Therapies - Acupuncture: What is it?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific points situated
all over the body. It’s aim is to balance the body’s energy, prevent
and treat disease.
Acupuncture, a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been
practiced in China for over 2000 years. Western acupuncture, (aka medical
acupuncture) is more recent and is now taught and practiced widely in the
west following a growth in popularity in the seventies.Click

Demystifying Acupuncture: A
Personal
Encounter With The Mysterious Cures Of Acupuncture
by John Herlihy
Utter the word acupuncture in polite
company and images of oversized needles and Chinese doctors searching for
a crucial nerve may come to mind. At best, people may think of acupuncture
as a medical cure effective for others, but not for themselves. At worst,
the instinctive horror of needles, like the terror of the dentist’s
drill, puts people off any thought of approaching this alternative source
of medicine without a second thought. In the medically advanced Western
societies, many people even consider this ancient traditional wisdom to be
a raw and radical new alternative to the progressive, techno-based Western
approach to medicine. Perhaps the time has finally arrived to demystify
the aura of uncertainty that still surrounds the modern-day practice of
acupuncture.

The
Treatment of ADHD
by Karen Donahue, M.Ac.
Conservative
estimates of the prevalence of ADHD suggest that 3-5% of all school age
children in the US is afflicted with ADHD.
Of that group, 70 % of these children also have learning
disabilities. This leaves us with
the mind-boggling questions of why and what do we do about it.
How are parents to come to terms with this when even the experts
cannot come to agreement about diagnosis, treatment, and the pathogenesis
of the disorder? Current theories
recognize that there is a psychosocial component to the disorder but the
morphosis of that component is not known - is it the ADHD that causes the
psychosocial disruptions or is it the psychosocial problems that
contribute to the ADHD. What
is the best treatment for this disorder?

Healing the Spirit with Acupuncture
by Dennis Willmont, Lic. Ac.
Throughout over 35 years of study, training
and clinical practice in Asian healing systems including Shiatsu,
acupressure, acupuncture, herbology, Chinese diet, Tai-chi Ch'uan, Ch'i-kung
and martial arts, I have sought an explanation as to how healing occurs on
the higher levels within our bodies. While acupuncture has such a well
developed theoretical basis for the treatment and prevention of physical
complaints, why isn't this true on the mental and spiritual levels as
well? For well over fifteen years, during which time I learned to read
Classical Chinese, I immersed myself in researching everything from Taoist
philosophy to the first acupuncture texts written 150 years before Christ
to hundreds of books and articles by Western Asian scholars about the old
culture that produced these healing systems and how the highest levels of
body, mind, spirit integration could be accessed.
